Democrats tried to take away Trump's Secret Service protection

In the wake of the assassination attempt of former President Donald Trump, attention is being called to the fact that some Democratic members of Congress have been working to take away Trump's Secret Service protection. 

The congressman who has led this push, according to Fox News, is U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS).

This is the same congressman who played a large role in the House Jan. 6 committee - the highly partisan committee that was supposed to investigate the events of Jan. 6, 2021, but, instead, spent its time trying to pin blame on Trump.

Suffice it to say that Thompson has found himself in a difficult position.

Thompson's bill

It was back in April 2024 that Thompson introduced his bill - the "Denying Infinite Security and Government Resources Allocated Toward Convicted and Extremely Dishonorable Former Protectees Act (or the DISGRACED Act).

At the time, Fox reported that Thompson "introduced legislation that would automatically nix Secret Service protection for those who have been convicted of a federal or state felony that carries a minimum one-year prison term."

It is no coincidence that this came at the same time that Democrat prosecutors were trying to get Trump convicted of a felony. Trump, of course, was, more recently, found guilty in the so-called hush-money case.

At the time, many accused Thompson, with this legislation, of essentially trying to get Trump killed. And, what happened over the weekend proves that Thompson's critics are right.

Secret Service is currently facing significant criticism for its handling of the assassination attempt, but just imagine what would have happened if Trump had no Secret Service. That, apparently, is what Thompson was pushing for.

Resign!

Thompson is now facing resignation calls, following the assassination attempt on Trump.

Thompson has not directly responded to the criticism, but he has released one of those generic political statements saying that there is "no room in American democracy for political violence."

One of Thompson's staffers, though, apparently disagrees. Following Trump's assassination attempt, Jacqueline Marsaw, on her social media account, wrote, "I don't condone violence but please get you some shooting lessons so you don't miss next time ooops that wasn't me talking."

She subsequently claimed that she "got overwhelmed in the moment" and that the post was intended to be comedic in nature, not serious. She added, " I am a diehard Democrat."

Thompson, however, felt that the best way forward was for his office to part ways with Marsaw. Accordingly, he has fired her.
