Trump shooter's parents called police hours before it happened

The parents of Thomas Matthew Crooks, the 20-year-old who shot former President Donald Trump on Saturday during a Butler, Pennsylvania rally, called police hours before the shooting took place to report him missing and say they were concerned about him, a source told Fox News.

It wasn't clear whether Crooks's parents knew he was in possession of an AR-15 rifle when he went missing.

Police did not say what, if any, action they took after they were called, either.

They still haven't come up with a motive for the shooting, which slightly injured Trump's ear but killed another rallygoer and seriously wounded two more.

No known motive

Crooks was killed by a sniper seconds after the shots were fired, so he can't provide any insight into his motive.

Police conducted a review of Crooks's online and social media accounts, but have not reported their findings.

His parents, Matthew and Mary Crooks, were both licensed professional counselors with social work licenses.

Crooks and his father were both members of a local gun club. He worked as a dietary aide at a local nursing home, but requested off Saturday because he had "something important to do."

He was a registered Republican. His father was Libertarian and his mother was a Democrat.

It's early in the investigation

“At present, we have not identified an ideology associated with the subject, but I want to remind everyone that we're still very early in this investigation,” Pittsburgh Special FBI Agent in Charge Kevin Rojek said of the process.

Identifying motive is important to law enforcement because they are looking at the shooting as a possible domestic terror event.

It could also be important to rule out a larger group being involved in the shooting, possibly convincing or hiring Crooks to shoot Trump.

Besides the shooting, Crooks also had two explosive devices in his car, the FBI and Homeland Security said.

Despite his extreme behavior, Crooks had no known history of mental illness. He didn't have a lot of friends and was known to be smart, according to some of his classmates.
