Bragg Will Not Challenge Trump Motion to Delay Sentencing

Manhattan DA Alving Bragg may have just handed Trump a gift horse.

Trump’s legal team has filed a motion to have Trump’s sentencing delayed until after the election.

In a rather shocking announcement, Bragg stated he would defer to the judge and not block the motion.

A Gift Horse

I was positive that Bragg would fight this and claim that nobody is above the law and nobody should receive special favors just because they are in an election.

That being the case, I was fairly certain that Judge Merchan was going to move forward with sentencing.

Instead, Bragg’s office responded to the motion, stating, “The People are also mindful that significant public safety and logistical steps by multiple agencies are necessary to prepare for court appearances in this matter.”

Bragg’s office was not so cooperative when Trump made yet another attempt to have Judge Merchan recused, arguing, “Although couched as a scheduling request, defendant re-raises for the fourth time a recusal grievance based on false claims of a potential conflict that have already been rejected over and over by this Court, the First Department, and the Advisory Committee.

“Defendant’s ostensibly new argument about the Court’s family member’s co-worker’s tweets is bizarre and has nothing to do with the post-trial schedule.”

With Bragg not blocking the new motion, I am now leaning toward Merchan granting the request solely to not give Trump an excuse if he loses the election.

I have zero doubt that Merchan despises Trump, but does that hatred rise to the point he wants to make Trump squirm or will he just push this back until it will not impact the election?

As I noted above, had Bragg fought the motion, I think it would be game over.

Now, however, I believe that Merchan will grant the motion and push sentencing back to late November or early December.
