Rudy Giuliani Disbarred Over Actions Taken in Wake of 2020 Election

A federal court has disbarred former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani for his actions during the aftermath of the 2020 presidential election.

This disbarment follows Giuliani's attempts to disrupt the presidential power transition by legally challenging election results without evidence, as The Hill reports.

The District of Columbia Circuit Court of Appeals issued the disbarment ruling on Monday, based on a recommendation from May by a disciplinary board affiliated with the D.C. Bar.

This board specifically targeted Giuliani's conduct in Pennsylvania during the 2020 election fallout.

According to the disciplinary board, Giuliani attempted to persuade a federal judge to disenfranchise hundreds of thousands of Pennsylvania voters. The board argued that his actions were unsupported by any credible evidence of election fraud.

The board's recommendation emphasized that disbarment was essential to protect the public, the courts, and the integrity of the legal profession, and to deter similar misconduct by other lawyers in the future.

Legal Consequences for Giuliani's Post-Election Conduct

Giuliani has faced multiple legal challenges related to his efforts to help Donald Trump retain power after the 2020 election results. These include contacting statehouse leaders in a bid to interfere with the election results.

Currently, Giuliani is also battling election interference charges in both Georgia and Arizona. Additionally, he has been named an unindicted co-conspirator in a federal case against Trump, concerning efforts to subvert the election.

Earlier, Giuliani faced disbarment in New York due to similar actions intended to keep Trump in power unlawfully.

Financial Struggles Amid Legal Battles

In December, Giuliani filed for bankruptcy following a defamation lawsuit that led to a $148 million judgment against him. Although this judgment was later dismissed, his appeal is still pending.

Before his involvement in Trump's post-election efforts, Giuliani was renowned as the mayor of New York City and as the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, roles in which he gained significant recognition.

The disciplinary board's statement was clear, "We conclude that disbarment is the only sanction that will protect the public, the courts, and the integrity of the legal profession, and deter other lawyers from launching similarly baseless claims in the pursuit of such wide-ranging yet completely unjustified relief," highlighting the severity of Giuliani's actions.

Reactions to Giuliani's Disbarment

Ted Goodman, Giuliani's political adviser, criticized the disbarment as "an absolute travesty and a total miscarriage of justice."

Goodman also called on members of the legal community to speak out against what he described as a "partisan, politically motivated decision."

He further lauded Giuliani's past achievements, stating, "The people coming after Mayor Giuliani can’t take away the fact that he remains the most effective prosecutor in American history, who did more to improve the lives of others than almost any other American alive today."
