Cruz Rips McConnell for Lack of Help During Senate Race
Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) has been in a dogfight with Rep. Colin Allred (D-TX) to keep his Senate seat.
Cruz revealed this week that while the GOP must have this seat, Minority Senate Leader McConnell (R-KY) has not helped him at all.
The Race
Allred is the Representative for the Dallas area, which is a more liberal voting base surrounded by nothing but conservatives. I am in one of the suburbs of Dallas, and you have to look long and hard for a liberal outside the area.
This is pretty typical of Texas, as all the big cities (San Antonio, Austin, and Houston) are saturated by liberals, but conservatives own everything else. Due to the populations of these big cities, however, Texas is bluer than ever, unfortunately, but not so blue that a race like this should be close, especially with Allred’s record.
Going back to the middle of October, Cruz had a real scare when polling showed Allred within a point of him. Cruz was begging for money because of all the outside money that was pouring into Allred’s campaign.
Since that poll, Cruz pretty much emptied his war chest, finally getting some air time and distancing himself from Allred. Governor Abbott also chipped in with some ads to point out Allred’s radical leftist agenda.
Since then, Cruz has steadily distanced himself in the race, now sitting on a solid 3% to 4% lead in most polls. In fact, the last poll that Allred closed was a poll that was ordered by his campaign, showing Allred and Cruz in a tie, but I tend not to put too much weight behind campaign-ordered polls. I will put my two cents here and say that Cruz takes the state comfortably.
No Help
Cruz has been screaming for weeks that he has gotten zero help from McConnell’s PAC during this election.
While McConnell does not control the money, his allies do, and with Cruz and McConnell at odds for much of the last four years, it is no surprise that Cruz is getting stiffed. This just proves more than ever, however, that McConnell needs to be replaced.
Cruz went off again this weekend on the subject, stating, "We are getting absolutely zero support from the Senate Leadership Fund (SLF).”
SLF spokeswoman Torunn Sinclair tried to explain the lack of support for the Cruz campaign, responding, "Ted Cruz is one of the best fundraisers in the Republican Party, he ran a great campaign, and he will be reelected handily on Tuesday.”
Cruz further stated that this has become the most expensive Senate race in the country, but he has been doing it all on his own. In fact, we have barely seen Donald Trump in the state to campaign for Cruz, which is baffling. The only time I ever heard Trump mention Cruz’s name was last week when he was in Austin for his interview with Joe Rogan.
Breaking the Law
I mentioned above that a lot of outside money has been flowing to Allred’s campaign, something that Ted Cruz has also mentioned. He recently stated, "Chuck Schumer is spending over $100 million with George Soros trying to beat me. And McConnell in the Senate Leadership Fund is spending zero.”
We have a real problem with congressional leadership that things have started to become personal. The respective leaders’ jobs are to support whatever candidate was elected in the primary race by the people, period. McConnell has refused to do that in the last two election cycles, so he clearly needs to be removed and replaced.
