Harris Insider: They Were Never Really in the Race
When Kamala Harris was first gifted the nomination, she was also handed a big lead over Trump.
That dissipated more every time she opened her mouth, but a member of her staff just dropped a bombshell that should have donors fuming.
Never Really in It
Harris senior adviser David Plouffe presented a rather interesting take on the election, "We didn’t get the breaks we needed on Election Day.”
He added, "I think it surprised people because there was these public polls that came out in late September, early October, showing us with leads that we never saw."
Mind you, right up until election day, Plouffe was pushing the narrative that Harris could win every swing state (she was shut out). And they were fundraising on this even though they knew they were behind, which has some Democrat fundraisers furious.
For instance, DNC National Finance Committee member and Harris campaign fundraiser Lindy Li stated, "We were told definitely that she had a shot at winning – it wasn't even a shot. I was even told that Pennsylvania was looking good, that we would win 3-4 swing states."
Making Excuses
Other Harris staffers are making some pretty lame excuses to explain the loss. For instance, Kamala Harris campaign officials Stephanie Cutter and Jen O'Malley Dillon blamed the media.
Cutter stated, "If you’re a candidate with a limited amount of time to get your voice out there and define yourself, you kind of have to do everything. But did it screw with our narrative? Not just in getting s--- not doing enough earned media but getting questions we knew voters were not going to care about.
“And their myopic mindset on certain issues was not what the race was going to be about. So at a certain point, we had to decide ‘is this helping us or hurting us?’"
After saying that the media was asking dumb questions, Dillon added, "They were not informing a voter who was trying to listen to learn more or to understand. And I’m not here to say that the whole system was focused on us incorrectly. I’m just saying, again, of the things we need to explore as we move forward as a campaign and as a country, that does a disservice to voters.”
Some Reality
While most of the party is making excuses, the one person I never expected to be realistic about the loss, former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, is dropping truth bombs on his party.
De Blasio stated, "Let‘s be honest, we‘ve got to be more honest. Part of what happened here is the American people were pissed off that they felt the Democratic Party was covering for Joe Biden. They were already upset with Joe Biden on a substantive level, not always fairly, but they were on things like inflation. And people are hurting.”
He later added, "I‘ll take my share of the blame," he admitted. "I mean, I wanted to believe Joe Biden could make it through. He was a great president in many ways. I wanted to believe he could hang on, but it stood to reason that he should not continue as our candidate. It stood to reason that one term was right, and a lot of Democrats kind of kept their mouths shut. And I think people felt out in the country a little betrayed by that."
Until Democrats admit they just read the room wrong, Democrats will continue to lose support. De Blasio has the right idea, but the fact he still thinks Biden was a “great president in many ways” shows that even he is still in denial.
