Trump Says He Would Consider Pardoning NYC Mayor Erick Adams

Since being elected, Donald Trump has, on multiple occasions, discussed possible pardons.

He suggested he would pardon Hunter Biden, and he said he would make J6 pardons on day one. Now, he is suggesting pardoning New York City Mayor Eric Adams.

Adams Indicted

The infamous Southern District of New York indicted Adams in September on bribery and campaign finance offenses.

U.S. Attorney Damian Williams announced, “As alleged, Mayor Adams abused his position as this City’s highest elected official, and before that as Brooklyn Borough President, to take bribes and solicit illegal campaign contributions.

“By allegedly taking improper and illegal benefits from foreign nationals—including to allow a Manhattan skyscraper to open without a fire inspection—Adams put the interests of his benefactors, including a foreign official, above those of his constituents.

“This Office and our partners at the FBI and DOI will continue to pursue corruption anywhere in this City, especially when that corruption takes the form of illegal foreign influence on our democratic system.”

More Problems for Adams

With every passing day, it seems as though another member of Adams’ administration is being indicted. One of his most trusted advisers joined that nefarious list last week, and this is now directly impacting Adams in terms of his quest to run for re-election.

Reports surfaced on Tuesday that Adams has been denied $4 million in matching funding for his re-election campaign (if you are not familiar, the match funding is very much part of the indictment against Adams).

This has nothing to do with current fundraising, as the board made very clear in an announcement, stating, “The board has determined that there is reason to believe the Adams campaign has engaged in conduct detrimental to the matching funds program in violation of law, including the Campaign Finance Act and board rules.”

The suspension, however, is due to the current indictment and investigation being conducted into Adams’ previous campaign.

Trump to the Rescue

Adams was one of the few Democrats who spoke up against the border issues, so it was really no surprise to see Trump come to the rescue for Adams, who Trump has likened the mayor’s prosecution to his own as being politically motivated. To that point, when Trump was asked if he would consider a pardon for Adams, he responded, "Yeah, I would. I think that he was treated pretty unfairly."

I can guarantee you that Trump has not looked at the legalities of this case, which alleges that Adams’ campaign was taking money from illegal sources, which enabled him to pump up his donations and claim more of the public match funds for his campaign.

If Adams is innocent, this will all play out in the courts. If he is found guilty and Trump pardons him, it will send a horrible message to average Americans who are already livid that public officials are rarely, if ever, held accountable for their actions.

Trump’s surrogates will all find some absurd reason to justify this pardon, but I can guarantee you there is no way I can be convinced pardoning Adams is the right thing to do. Trump better start thinking ahead and toward 2028 because moves like this are going to hurt the conservative movement, not help it.
