Democrats refuse to vote on Trump budget pick
We're only a few days into Donald Trump's second term, but liberals in this country are already making one thing very clear:
They are NOT going to make things easy for Trump while he's in the White House.
MSN reports that Democrats on the Senate budget committee are going so far as to boycott the vote to advance Russell Vought's nomination to lead the Office of Management and Budget.
They called Vought a threat to democracy and wrote in a statement that they refused to "vote for someone so clearly unfit for office."
Russel Vought
Trump's pick to lead the White House budget office has been making headlines during his confirmation process for some of his views. Among the controversial opinions was his response to Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, a Democrat from Rhode Island, asking whether Joe Biden won the 2020 election.
"I believe that the 2020 election was rigged," Vought said.
This answer, and others like it, have led Democrats in this country to protest Vought's nomination. Once Donald Trump's new administration announced a freeze on federal grant funding, Democrats started fighting back even harder.
Senate Democrats have even wanted to completely postpone Vought's confirmation hearings until the funding freezes can be worked out. Critics of the funding freeze say that the order impacted critical programs that receive federal aid, such as Head Start and Meals on Wheels.
Republicans not waiting around.
Despite the reservations from Democrats, Republicans have plowed ahead with Vought's confirmation. There was a last-minute decision by Democrats to boycott Vought's committee vote, but Republicans went ahead anyway.
The absence of any liberal opposition meant that Vought's committee vote ended in an 11-0 unanimous decision, and will now advance to a full Senate vote.
Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer has been one of the most vocal critics of Russell Vought.
"Mr. Vought will be the architect of more losing for President Trump," Chuck Schumer said.
Vought has been criticized for his involvement in the memo that Trump's administration recently sent out announcing a pause on all federal funding. Democrats on the committee blamed Vought as a source of inspiration for the funding freeze memo.
In a letter, Senator Patty Murray and Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro, the top Democrats on the Senate and House budget committees, wrote that Trump's efforts to freeze federal funding were "guided by the same philosophy" that Vought had expressed in recent writings about the federal government. Murray and DeLauro called the actions "unlawful" and warned that pausing federal funding would "have devastating consequences across the country."
Do you agree with the Democrats trying to stop Vought from being confirmed, or are you siding with the Republicans who approved him?
