VP Vance says US has 'range of options' in negotiations with Russia over ending Ukraine war
President Donald Trump recently spoke with President Vladimir Putin and discussed many topics, including the ongoing war in Ukraine that Trump has vowed to end at the beginning of his presidency.
According to Fox News, while Trump celebrated the call with Putin as a successful one, Vice President J.D. Vance elaborated on what Trump's vision is for ending the war in Ukraine, including mentioning a "range of options" should Putin not come to the negotiating table.
Vance stressed that Trump wants "productive" meetings with Putin on the issue.
The vice president emphasized that by "range of options," he's primarily speaking of economic tools to pressure Putin and Russia into being more open-minded about ending the war.
What did he say?
Vance reportedly spoke to The Wall Street Journal about the ongoing negotiations.
"If you look at President Trump's approach to this, the range of options is extremely broad, and there are economic tools of leverage," Vance told The Journal.
He added, "There are, of course, military tools of leverage. There's a whole host of things that we could do. But fundamentally, I think the President wants to have a productive negotiation, both with Putin and with Zelenskyy."
The vice president mentioned that he believes the deal that will ultimately happen will be shocking for the world.
"I think there is a deal that is going to come out of this that’s going to shock a lot of people," Vance told the outlet.
He made the comments to the outlet just before meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Munich, according to the report.
Trump's phone call
The president bragged about his phone call with Putin, touching on what the two world leaders spoke about while expressing confidence that a deal regarding Ukraine can be reached.
"We have also agreed to have our respective teams start negotiations immediately, and we will begin by calling President Zelenskyy, of Ukraine, to inform him of the conversation, something which I will be doing right now," Trump wrote on Truth Social after the call with Putin.
He added, "I have asked Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Director of the CIA John Ratcliffe, National Security Advisor Michael Waltz, and Ambassador and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, to lead the negotiations which, I feel strongly, will be successful."
Only time will tell what kind of deal Trump reaches with the Russian president.
