Texas seeks federal help to secure islands from cartels

Cartel-infested islands along the Rio Grande have been claimed by Texas in an effort to curb criminal activity attributed to Mexican drug organizations. This initiative aims to dismantle illegal operations in the region, marking a significant step in the state's broader campaign against cross-border crimes and illegal immigration.

In an appeal to the Trump administration, Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham underscored the necessity for federal assistance in securing and defending two strategically vital islands: Beaver Island and the Roma Islands.

The request focuses on two separate areas within Starr County, Texas, including Beaver Island, which spans approximately 20.3 acres. The Roma Islands, located near Roma, Texas, consist of two parcels measuring 12.13 and 20.3 acres and have earned the notorious reputation of being a "smuggler's paradise."

Importance of designating island ownership

These islands have become known for facilitating illicit activities carried out by cartels, such as smuggling rings and storing contraband like weapons and drugs. With Texas's new claim to these islands, authorities plan to implement substantial changes, including vegetation clearance and the installation of razor wire to bolster territorial control.

Commissioner Buckingham highlighted the obstacles faced by law enforcement on these islands, due to their ambiguous national ownership. In her words, when islands exist in a "no man's land," neither the U.S. nor Mexico can effectively enforce laws or engage in military action on them.

This declaration aligns with past efforts in 2023 when a 170-acre area known as Fronton Island, previously ungoverned, was officially incorporated into Texas. Such initiatives signify the state's dedication to reclaiming and securing territory previously used for unlawful activities.

Scope of Operation Lone Star

Operation Lone Star is a broader security initiative launched by Governor Greg Abbott during the Biden administration. It seeks to reinforce Texas's southern border not only by bringing islands under U.S. jurisdiction but also through other law enforcement measures to combat the persistent threat of cross-border crime.

The current move comes in response to inquiries from the Texas Military Department, which solicited the Texas General Land Office's (GLO) opinion on the islands' status. This collaboration underscores the coordinated statewide efforts to fortify territorial security.

Once the islands are officially under Texas's oversight, implementing physical security measures becomes paramount. The introduction of razor wire and clear lines of sight are expected to deter criminal activities orchestrated by drug cartels.

Support from the Trump administration

The Trump administration has demonstrated support in bolstering Texas's fight against illegal border traffic. This assistance has significantly impacted border security, resulting in a notable 95% decrease in illegal crossings.

Commissioner Buckingham noted the historical significance of expanding Texas's physical domain, reflecting on being the first female land commissioner to achieve this in centuries. She expressed enthusiasm and a sense of progress in the state's territorial reclamation efforts.

Through these coordinated actions, Texas aims to disrupt cartel operations and restore safety in areas long targeted by organized crime networks. The complexities of jurisdiction have been a substantial barrier, which the state seeks to address through such declarations and actions.

Future implications of securing islands

In addition to immediate security enhancements, the successful claim over the islands may lead to broader legislation and preventive measures at both state and federal levels. This response is critical as ongoing cartel activities continue to challenge regional law enforcement and community safety.

While the exact timeline for the new security measures remains to be finalized, the state's proactive stance signals a critical policy shift. By prioritizing territorial control, Texas hopes to pave the way for tangible reductions in smuggling and related criminal enterprises.

The commitment to defending these newly claimed lands aligns with Texas's extensive ongoing border security strategy. As the situation evolves, further collaboration with federal authorities will be essential to ensure the comprehensive protection of these strategic territories.
