Bondi casts doubt on Trump third term
Last week, Donald Trump set the media on fire by claiming his team was looking for a “loophole” in the Constitution that would allow him to run for a third term.
Attorney General Pam Bondi still left the door open for that to happen, but she appeared to be leaning more toward Trump stepping away at the conclusion of this term.
Finding the loophole
Trump got all of this started about a week ago when he was doing an interview with NBC News, stating, “A lot of people want me to do it."
“But, I mean, I basically tell them we have a long way to go, you know, it’s very early in the administration.”
Trump then suggested that one possible approach would be to run as Vance’s VP, then have Vance resign the office so Trump could take over as president again.
This set people off on both sides of the aisle, including this author, who was livid that Trump would try to find a “loophole” in the Constitution.
Media goes nuts
Those words had no sooner come out of Trump’s mouth when the media started to attack.
For instance, the New York Times headlines a report, “President’s Third Term Talk Defies Constitution and Tests Democracy.”
As I stated in a previous report, this was one of my main concerns when Trump took this approach.
He was also putting his fellow Republicans in a bind, as the media would be sure to stick a microphone in everyone’s face to see where they stood on this.
Bondi pours water on narrative
It took a little longer than I thought it would, but this week, the media finally got around to asking Republicans if they supported Trump going for a third term.
Attorney General Pam Bondi tried to put this fire out, but she definitely left the door open for Trump to figure something out.
She stated, “President Trump has served one full term. He’s on his second full term. He’s a very smart man. And we — I wish we could have him for 20 years as our president. But I think he’s going to be finished probably after this term.”
“Probably” was the operative word there, and the media did challenge Bondi on using that word, but I would suspect that Bondi and those close to Trump are trying to talk him out of pursuing this narrative. Conservatives are not supposed to look for “loopholes” to exploit in the Constitution… it is our job to protect it. Hopefully, that message gets through to Trump.
