Dems crossing over to support sanctuary city crackdown
Donald Trump recently announced a threat to pull back funding from sanctuary cities.
The threat is an empty one unless he can get enough Democrats to support it and have it passed in Congress, and the way things sound, Trump may just be inching his way to that magic number.
Protecting American Communities
On April 28, 2025, the White House released a “fact sheet” called “President Donald J. Trump Protects American Communities from Criminal Aliens.”
In essence, Trump was calling out sanctuary cities and states, threatening to pull federal funding if they did not follow his guidelines.
Trump had stated, “No more Sanctuary Cities! They protect the Criminals, not the Victims. They are disgracing our Country, and are being mocked all over the World. Working on papers to withhold all Federal Funding for any City or State that allows these Death Traps to exist!!!”
Again, the threat is empty due to the fact that current laws mandate that all congressionally approved funds must be dispersed. The only way to claw them back is through Congress.
Senate Dem Crossing the Line
Recently, Senator Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) called out his fellow Democrats for speaking for the American Latino community when they are getting it all wrong.
Gallego slapped his fellow Democrats right in the mouth, stating, "It's usually white liberals that are talking to liberal Latinos, and they are essentially saying that's what working-class Latinos feel and think about immigration. When in reality, they don't."
He had said something similar in an earlier interview after Democrats pushed back against the Laken Riley legislation, stating, "They're welcome to give me advice and everything else like that. But don't come and try to lie to me and say that that's where the Latino voter is. Because that's not the case."
Gallego knows the people who came here legally want our border laws enforced, adding, "They do want immigration reform. They do think that people that have been here, and have roots in the community and are working and don't have any criminal record, should have a right to become U.S. citizens. But they also do not believe that you should be able to come to the border as easily as has happened in the past."
House Problems
There are also now a handful of Democrats in the House who see things differently than the party line.
When legislation was presented in the House that was tied to sanctuary cities, five Democrats crossed the aisle to vote with the GOP. They were Reps. Henry Cuellar (D-TX), Laura Gillen (D-N.Y.), Don Davis (D-N.C.), Jared Golden (D-ME) and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (D-WA).
In a second piece of legislation, eight Dems crossed the aisle, something the Trump administration noted when the bill passed, calling it “bipartisan” due to the Democrat support.
The two issues that continue to haunt the Democrat Party are transgenders and immigration, and the GOP is clearly on the right side of public sentiment in both. While I fully expect the House to flip back to Dems in the mid-term elections, these two issues could possibly save the GOP from losing control.
