Trump says he and DeSantis are just fine
During the 2024 primary cycle, the Trump campaign and his surrogates took some pretty low shots at DeSantis and his family, which I did not like.
It would appear, however, that DeSantis now considers this water under the bridge, as does Trump, calling their relationship now nearly perfect.
The Trump hits
The direct hits by Trump were typical mudslinging, and nothing overly horrible.
Trump took to calling DeSantis “DeSanctimonious,” whatever that is supposed to mean. It seemed childish to me, but MAGA loved it, so Trump kept using it.
What I did not like was when Trump started questioning DeSantis’ record, literally saying that Gavin Newsom was a better governor.
I have never liked fellow Republicans slinging mud at each other directly (that is our job), and I thought it was a cheap shot, but that is not what really got under my skin.
The surrogates
Now, as I have stated before, I was a DeSantis guy in the primary race, but if he lost a fair fight, so be it, but this fight really got dirty, and I did not like the fact that Trump did not draw the line with his surrogates.
For instance, Laura Loomer took shots at Casey DeSantis over her fight with cancer, calling it “over-exaggerated.” At one point, she even questioned if Casey had cancer since her medical records had never been made public (she is a private citizen, and her medical records are protected).
Then there was Roger Stone, who I think is, well, I can’t say what I really think, but you get the idea. Stone called Casey the “C” word, as well as making other disgusting comments about her.
Trump never told them to back down, he never apologized for what they were saying... he just allowed it all to happen, and that really got under my skin. And it was not just because I am a DeSantis supporter; I just thought it was despicable behavior.
The feud is over
DeSantis is a politician, and he can put on a happy face when he has to, but he never caved to Trump the way Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) did after Trump took some cheap shots about his wife during the 2016 campaign.
To that point, when Trump arrived in Florida, they greeted each other like they had in years past, yucking it up and slapping each other on the back.
When Trump was asked about his relationship with DeSantis, he responded, “Ten out of 10 — maybe 9.9.” He later added, “As you know, Ron and I have had a really great relationship. We had a little off period for a couple of days.”
I guess we will really see how good this relationship is when it comes time for Trump to throw his support behind a gubernatorial candidate. Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) is a top ally of Trump’s in the House, but the rumors are that Casey DeSantis is considering a run. If Trump just stays out of the fight, I would say that he and DeSantis have mended the fence, but if he backs Donalds, I would say this was all a show by DeSantis just to get that $450 million federal contract for opening Alligator Alcatraz.
