Newsom’s gerrymandering idea rejected by voters
California Governor Gavin Newsom has been getting a lot of mileage out of Texas redoing its district maps. So much so, in fact, that Newsom said he would fight back by gerrymandering California’s maps worse than they already are.
However, he just hit a roadblock… voters.
Have you looked?
For those of you not already familiar with California’s maps, they have one of the best examples of gerrymandering in the country.
California is roughly 60-40% in favor of Democrats in federal elections.
Yet, Republicans have only nine of the 52 congressional seats allotted to the state.
If you do the math, you can see how out of whack their maps are right now.
I’ll do it
Newsom started this off by telling Trump that if he did not back off, California would redo its maps.
Then he started to act like a child, duplicating Trump’s trolling style on social media to get support.
When the Texas Democrats left the state, California was one of the states they went to, rallying other Democrats to help them fight back.
So, Newsom announced his plan to add a referendum to the upcoming ballot that would turn the maps over to the state legislature solely for the purpose of further gerrymandering the maps. He would then return the drawing of the lines back to the commission that currently handles that task in 2030.
We Do Not Approve
Shockingly, the voters of California rejected the idea in recent polling.
Only 36% of those polled believe the procedure should be changed, as the overwhelming majority of voters in the state do not want the maps gerrymandered any further.
Now, to be clear, I do not support gerrymandered maps, and I never will, even when it benefits Republicans. When Texas announced its plan, I had even stated that this was a losing proposition because I knew Democrat-run states would more than offset these gains.
This is something that needs to be addressed, but the current political climate only encourages it, and the media does nothing to expose it unless it is being done by the Republican Party.
New York, California, and Illinois are arguably three of the worst states in the country when it comes to gerrymandering, but tell me the last time you saw a story about that on CNN or any of the other leftist mainstream media outlets in this country.
