Trump takes on reporter who claims he is at war with Chicago
Donald Trump has marked Chicago as a possible target for his crime crackdown, but the way he did it really set some people off.
When a reporter questioned him on his quest to go to war with Chicago, well, let’s just say Trump was ready for it.
Trump was already taking heat from local officials for saying he wanted to send in the National Guard, but a meme he posted triggered them on a whole new level.
"Chipocalypse now"
Trump posted a meme on social media depicting him in “Apocalypse Now,” only he called it “Chipocalypse Now,” adding a special note for Chicago's criminal element.
The caption on the post stated, “Chicago about to find out why it’s called the Department of WAR.
“I love the smell of deportations in the morning…,” which was a take on the line from the movie, “I love the smell of napalm in the morning.”
Trump did it to get a reaction, and boy did he, including from Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, who responded, “The President of the United States is threatening to go to war with an American city. This is not a joke. This is not normal. Donald Trump isn't a strongman, he's a scared man. Illinois won’t be intimidated by a wannabe dictator.”
Making his case
If Pritzker does not want Trump to come in and address the issue, one would think that he and Mayor Johnson would get their heads together and do something about the crime issue, but that is not happening.
Last week, nearly six dozen people were shot, and five were killed, pretty typical for a holiday weekend in the Windy City.
This last weekend was worse in terms of deaths, with seven people being killed and at least 19 having been shot.
One of the murders seemed like a hit, with a man reportedly standing outside when he was approached by his killer, and executed on the street. I wish I could say this was out of the ordinary, but we read similar reports every Monday.
Baited
Now, nobody really thinks that Trump has declared war on Chicago, but I do think he chose his words to get the reaction he got from the mayor and governor, and now the media is buying in.
A journalist asked Trump if he was going to war with Chicago, and Trump was all fired up and ready to take her on, angrily responding, "When you say that, darling, that’s fake news.” When she tried to cut in, Trump shut her down, then continued, "Be quiet, listen! You don’t listen! You never listen. That’s why you’re second-rate.
“We’re not going to war. We’re gonna clean up our cities. We’re gonna clean them up, so they don’t kill five people every weekend. That’s not war, that’s common sense."
Last year, Chicago had more murders, 573, than any other city in the country, and it was the 13th consecutive year that Chicago has owned that disgrace, yet people keep electing Democrats to office. And somehow, Trump has managed to back them into a corner, defending murderers over law-abiding citizens and legal residents. So, like I said, Trump set the bait, and the media and local politicians were more than happy to take the bait.
