A Marine's final battle against rare cancer

Over the Memorial Day weekend, Cullen Crowley, a 25-year-old former Marine and son of Joe Crowley, a former U.S. Representative from New York, passed away.

Cullen's life was marked by service, resilience, and a struggle with a rare disease.

Cullen was diagnosed with desmoplastic small round cell tumors merely seven months after graduating from the Naval Academy. His promising career as a Marine was cut short due to his battle with this rare and aggressive cancer. Initially joining as a Midshipman in 2018, Cullen advanced to the rank of Marine by 2022.

Distinguished career interrupted

Stationed at Quantico, Virginia, Cullen served diligently until his retirement in 2024 following his diagnosis. His father, Joe Crowley, shared their family's sorrow in a heartfelt message on the social media platform X. Joe expressed his family's profound grief, announcing that “Kasey, Kenzie, Liam, and I share the passing of our beloved son and brother.”

The former congressman also reflected on Cullen’s personality, noting that Cullen had an infectious and sincere zest for life. This enthusiasm for living bolstered the people around him significantly. Despite the challenges he faced, especially with his health, Cullen maintained a positive demeanor, uplifting those he encountered during his journey.

In 2023, Cullen underwent a remarkable 15-hour surgery aimed at removing tumors from his abdomen and kidney. Unfortunately, during this period, the cancer had already metastasized to his bones, complicating his prognosis.

Determination and strength

Even while dealing with his severe and spreading illness, Cullen displayed extraordinary strength. Joe Crowley noted that his son stayed resilient throughout the grueling process, highlighting that Cullen "stayed strong throughout" the tribulations he faced. True to his Marine identity, Cullen battled his illness with courage and perseverance.

The Crowley family experienced significant changes previously when Joe's political career took a different turn. Joe Crowley was unseated by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez during the 2018 Democratic primary, coincidentally, the same day Cullen was first taken to the Naval Academy by his father. This intersection of personal and professional milestones marked a pivotal chapter for the Crowley family.

Joe Crowley emphasized his son’s unyielding spirit and how Cullen chose not to be overshadowed by the adversity he confronted. Cullen faced every day with joy and an appreciation for life, as his father recounted. This committed outlook served not only as a personal guide for Cullen but as an inspiration to his family and friends.

Lasting legacy of resilience

Upon Cullen’s retirement as a first lieutenant, he left behind a legacy of determination and commitment to the values he held dear. Cullen's journey from initial diagnosis to his eventual passing over Memorial Day weekend was marked by remarkable courage.

Joe Crowley's tribute to his son extended beyond mere accolades. It was a testament to Cullen's enduring spirit. His life, so deeply intertwined with challenges and achievements, remained a beacon of resilience to those around him until the end.

The family acknowledged the loss with a mixture of pride and sorrow. Through acknowledging his struggles and triumphs, Joe Crowley underscored the impact his son had on those who were fortunate enough to know him.

Cullen Crowley’s story is one of bravery, love, and an unwavering dedication to service. His life leaves behind a legacy to be remembered and cherished by those who shared his journey.
