Activist group files suit to block Alligator Alcatraz
Last week, Governor Ron DeSantis announced that he was opening up Alligator Alcatraz in Florida to house illegal immigrants.
The facility is to be expanded, but there is a soft opening scheduled this week, which Trump is scheduled to attend, but this could all be put on hold after a lefty group filed suit to block it.
Big win for Florida
While conservatives have loved the idea, the left is blowing up.
This would generate significant income for the state, as well as create a massive holding facility, which in and of itself would be a deterrent.
Florida Democrats do not see it that way, however, with State Senator Shevrin Jones stating, “They are locking people in a swamp in extreme heat with no clear plan for humane conditions.”
That did not stop DeSantis from touting the project, stating, “This is going to be a force multiplier, and we are really happy to be working with the federal government to satisfy President Trump’s mandate.”
GOP cashing in
It took the Florida GOP about five seconds to turn this into a money stream, and I have to admit, I have already purchased some beverage koozies for myself and some friends.
The state GOP website has already started selling shirts and the koozies to raise money for the state party, and from what I can see, the products are flying off the shelves.
The site is also touting the new project in fundraising emails, stating, "The feds have greenlit Alligator Alcatraz — Florida's gator-guarded, python-patrolled prison for illegal aliens who thought they could game the system.
"Surrounded by miles of swamp and bloodthirsty wildlife, this ain't no vacation spot. It's a one-way ticket to regret for criminals who'll wish they'd self-deported."
Block it
While I would love to see this project work out, as I think it is a great way to deter people from coming here illegally, the activists are already jumping in.
A suit has been filed, arguing, “This massive detention center will blight one of the most iconic ecosystems in the world.
“This reckless attack on the Everglades — the lifeblood of Florida — risks polluting sensitive waters and turning more endangered Florida panthers into roadkill. It makes no sense to build what’s essentially a new development in the Everglades for any reason, but this reason is particularly despicable.”
Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier disagrees, saying the site chosen is ideal and will have minimal impact on the wildlife. So, I would wager a study will be ordered, which could take months, so I am not getting overly excited about this just yet.
