Blue State Governor Caves on Trump Arresting Criminal Migrants
Heading into the election, and even in the aftermath, we saw numerous blue state Democrat governors say they would push back against Trump’s immigration plans.
Among those was Governor Maura Healey, who was adamant that Massachusetts would not be helping Trump deport illegals… but she has just walked that back considerably.
Pushing Back
Multiple blue states threatened to fight Donald Trump after he was elected, but one of the most vocal was California.
Governor Newsom called for a special legislative session to Trump-proof the state to preserve “California values.”
Within about 60 days, the state legislature came through for Newsom, passing legislation that would move money to state agencies to fight back against Trump’s agenda.
From what I have seen thus far, the state legislature now had two $25 million bills specifically to fund legal fights against the Trump administration.
Massachusetts Joins the Fight
Governor Healey immediately stated that Massachusetts would "absolutely not" cooperate with Trump and that she would use “every tool in the toolbox” to fight Trump.
In pushing back against Trump’s agenda, she stated, "I do think it is important that we all recognize that there is going to be a lot of pressure on states and state officials. I can assure you we're going to work hard to deliver.”
She later added, "Some realities need to be noted and that is in 2016, we had a different situation in the courts, and I am sure there may be litigation ahead, there is a lot of other ways people are going to act and need to act for the sake of their states and residents. There's regulatory authority and executive powers and the like, there's legislation also within our state.
"So I think the key here is that, you know, every tool in the tool box has got to be used to protect our citizens, to protect our residents and protect our states and to hold the line on democracy and the rule of law as a basic principle."
The Reversal
Healey apparently got an earful from her constituents because she is now walking back her statement, at least partly.
She now supports "the apprehension of criminals in our communities.” She later addressed the arrests that were talking place in her state, saying, "What it seems to be, and what we expected and what I support, which is the apprehension of criminals in our communities."
Healey added, "Whether you’re documented or undocumented, you commit crimes, you’re subject to investigation and prosecution and accountability, and it looks like that is what happened.”
This is common sense… people who break the law should not be protected. And surely those who entered the country illegally do not deserve protection. Round them up and send them back home.
