Brazilian mayoral candidate rushed to hospital following assault by opponent using metal chair

It turns out the United States isn't the only country with an entertaining election cycle in progress. This was demonstrated when a debate dissolved into an altercation with a metal chair in Brazil.

On Monday, a candidate for the position of mayor in Sao Paulo, Brazil was treated and released from a hospital after one of his five opponents in a televised debate struck him with a metal chair in response to allegations of sexual misconduct, as Fox News reported.

Pablo Marçal, a right-wing politician who transitioned from a personal development influencer, referenced the allegations against José Luiz Datena, a former TV presenter who is now a candidate, during the debate on Sunday evening. He claimed that Datena had intended to strike him.

He added: "You're not even man enough to do this."

The Attack

Datena, who has refuted the allegations, subsequently approached Marçal's lectern with the chair above his head and struck him in the side as the influencer raised his arms.

Later on Sunday night, the debate was resumed without Marçal, as the moderator of the TV Cultura debate abruptly interrupted and transitioned to ads.

Marçal's team shared video footage of him then racing to a hospital in an ambulance while receiving respiratory support. On Monday, he disclosed on his social media platforms that he had experienced respiratory difficulties and had sustained a fracture at the base of his rib cage.

The Syrian-Lebanese hospital announced on Monday that Marçal had been discharged after experiencing "trauma to the right chest region and right wrist, without major associated complications."

From the Campaign

On social media, Marcal referred to the incident as an "attempted homicide," and he connected it to the assassination attempt that was made against Donald Trump earlier this year, as well as to the stabbing that was committed against former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro in the run-up to the presidential election in 2018.

Nevertheless, a video that was shared on social media shows a physician speaking to Marcal when he is lying in the hospital bed. The physician informs Marcal that he has "a little line of a fracture."

In recent months, Marcal has been able to rocket up in the polls and is now running neck-and-neck with incumbent Ricardo.

He has done this by using his large following on the internet and his heated speech to create a political movement that is developing.
