Canada Premier Threatens US with Cutting Off Energy Supplies
The war between Donald Trump and Canada is now on.
The Canadian Premier, Doug Ford, is now threatening to take action against Trump if Trump follows through with his threat to hit Canada with tariffs if they do not do their duty regarding the issues at the border.
Threat Threatens Tariffs
Donald Trump is calling out Mexico and Canada to start to do their jobs in regard to the border.
If they are not going to start helping to slow the flow of migrants over the border, Trump stated that he will begin to hit both countries with 25% tariffs until they start to do their jobs.
Trump stated, "On January 20th, as one of my many first Executive Orders, I will sign all necessary documents to charge Mexico and Canada a 25% Tariff on ALL products coming into the United States, and its ridiculous Open Borders.”
If Trump does install these tariffs, this could possibly be a violation of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), so now both Canada and Mexico are pushing back.
Mexico Pushing Back
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has already pushed back on the idea of her country getting hit with tariffs by Trump.
After Trump announced the tariffs, Sheinbaum responded, "One tariff will follow another in response and so on, until we put our common businesses at risk.”
She later had a call with Trump to discuss the tariffs, but there were mixed reports on how that call went.
Trump stated that the call went great, and she had more or less agreed to meet Trump’s terms, but Sheinbaum denied that was the case. She stated that she merely told Trump where she stood and that she was going to hold firm.
Canada Responds to Tariff Threat
Trudeau and Trump have had a visit, with Trudeau flying down to Mar-a-Lago to discuss things with Trump over the holiday weekend.
Trudeau has not really been confrontational with Trump, but his premier is drawing a line in the sand.
Ford, in response to the tariffs, stated, "Some premiers proactively identified products that their provinces produce and export to the United States and which the U.S. relies on, and which should be considered as part of the Canadian response. This included some critical minerals and metals.”
If I were Canada, I would just step up and do what Trump is asking in regard to the border. If Canada gets into a tariff war with the United States, this is not going to end well for Canada or Mexico.
