Columbia activist arrested by ICE set free by judge
It has been yet another tough week for Trump in the courtroom.
The latest law saw Columbia protester Mohsen Mahdawi set free after being arrested in April.
Got Him
The Trump administration has been adamant that it will not allow students here on a visa to be anti-American.
To that point, Mohsen Mahdawi, who is a legal resident living in the United States for 10 years, was apprehended by ICE in early April.
Mahdawi was arrested in Vermont when he was showing up for his citizenship appointment, but ICE snagged him and took him into custody.
Luna Droubi, his attorney, stated, “This is their M.O. They just continue to hide the individual to the point where their attorneys can’t quite understand or identify where to file.
“And so, you know, we’re operating blind, and they have all the information, and yet we’re tasked with attempting to file in the right jurisdiction.”
Arrest Challenged
I doubt anyone was surprised to see this arrest challenged, and it did not take long for Mahdawi’s attorneys to file.
After the suit was filed, Mohsen Mahdawi stated, “I don’t want people to lose hope. Stay positive and believe in the inevitability of justice. This hearing is part of the system of democracy; it prevents a tyrant from having unchecked power.
“I am in prison, but I am not imprisoned. A system of democracy guarantees freedom of speech, speaking of Palestine does not only qualify as freedom of speech, but it is also about our humanity. Keep the hope alive; I will see you under the sun.”
Set Him Free
Last week, Mahdawi got the news that a federal judge had ordered him to be set free.
As Mahdawi left the courthouse, he had a message for Trump, stating, "I'm not afraid of you,"
Several Democrats, including Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) had issued a statement, which read, "These individuals refused to provide any information as to where he was being taken or what would happen to him. This is immoral, inhumane, and illegal. Mr. Mahdawi, a legal resident of the United States, must be afforded due process under the law and immediately released from detention."
This is something that will hurt Trump and the GOP moving forward, as he has little chance of winning these cases, but it is supplying Democrats with some major ammunition in their quest of portraying Trump as a dictator who thinks he can do whatever he wants to whomever he pleases. So, either Trump is completely ignoring advice of White House counsel, or White House counsel is comprised of a bunch of morons who do not know the law.
