Comey indicted by grand jury
Today could possibly be the second-best day of my life as a political writer.
I get to report that a grand jury has indicted former FBI Director James Comey on charges of lying to Congress.
The best day of my life as a political writer will be reporting that he was found guilty and sentenced to jail.
No Idea
Comey, as far as I am concerned, was one of the most dishonest public officials of our time. I would not call him corrupt, as he personally never benefited from his lies, but lie he did, and he clearly was part of the rogue element that weaponized the DOJ against Trump.
When former Attorney General William Barr said he was concerned about various aspects of the Russian collusion investigation, Comey played dumb, stating, “I have no idea what on Earth he is talking about.
“This was an investigation, it was appropriately predicated and opened that had to be opened and it was in the main conducted in the right way, picked up by the special counsel, lead to the indictment of dozens of people, and a finding by your colleagues in the Senate that the head of Trump’s campaign was a grave counterintelligence threat to the United States of America because he was funneling in information to a known Russian intelligence officer.
“The notion that the attorney general believes that was an illegitimate endeavor to investigate that mystifies me.”
Weaponizing
Even though Comey clearly weaponized the government to take out Trump, when Comey was being investigated, the media called it the weaponization against Trump’s enemies.
When the government went after Trump, it was fine, but when Trump went after people who clearly broke the law, the media did not even consider that they were right.
Well, a federal charge is different, as there has to be a grand jury to indict the individual, so this is not Pam Bondi going rogue and pushing Trump’s agenda.
When the grand jury was called, it is up to prosecutors to answer their questions and allow them to come to a conclusion, and they just reached one.
Indicted
With the statute of limitations running out, there was little time left to get charges filed before Comey would walk free forever. Tuesday was the deadline, so they beat it by about five days.
It was not quite the last second, but it was close to the bell going off when it was announced that the grand jury returned an indictment against Comey for “false statement and obstruction.”
Bondi posted that this indictment “reflects this Department of Justice’s commitment to holding those who abuse positions of power accountable for misleading the American people. We will follow the facts in this case.”
Comey told Senator Cruz (R-TX) during testimony that he had not leaked information about the investigation, but Deputy Director Andrew McCabe stated that he was directed to leak information to the media by Comey. The media and Democrats are going to go crazier than they did over Kimmel for this, but these are legit charges, and I pray that we get to see Comey in an orange jumpsuit.
