Copycat threats prompt FBI resource diversion

The FBI is grappling with an influx of threats following a controversial Instagram post by former Director James Comey.

An image depicting the phrase "86 47" shared by Comey has sparked concern for current FBI Director Kash Patel, leading to a significant diversion of resources to address pseudo-threats against President Donald Trump.

The situation began when Comey posted a photo on Instagram in which seashells were arranged to display "86 47." This cryptic message was interpreted by some as a call to "get rid of" President Trump, the 47th president of the United States.

Director Patel's Resource Concerns

Following this post, Comey met with Secret Service officials in Washington to discuss the implications of his actions. Despite his explanation that he had not associated the numbers with violence, the post led to significant controversy.

With numerous individuals seemingly inspired by Comey's message, FBI Director Kash Patel has voiced frustration over having to redirect agents from other critical areas. "Do you know how many agents I’ve had to take offline from chasing down child sex predators, fentanyl traffickers, terrorists?" Patel asked.

Patel emphasized the detriment of these diversions by noting the widespread social media threats emulating the phrase. "That’s what I’m having to deal with every single day," he said.

Public Safety and Political Statements

The FBI has labeled the number of these so-called "copycat" threats as significant but has refrained from providing exact figures. An anonymous official stressed the necessity of maintaining focus on genuine public safety instead of what the official referred to as "political stunts."

According to the same official, the chaos incited by Comey's post was particularly concerning due to his background. "This kind of chaos was normalized by someone who knows better," the official said.

The officials also highlighted Comey’s past prominence in the public sphere and urged politicians to concentrate on public security rather than the unintended consequences of controversial messages.

Comey's Response and President's Reaction

In response to the backlash, James Comey clarified that violence was not his intention, and he subsequently removed his post. He expressed regret for any unintended harm, noting, "I didn't realize some folks associate those numbers with violence."

However, President Trump dismissed Comey's clarification, doubling down on his interpretation of the phrase as "assassination." He expressed disbelief at Comey's explanation, stating, "He knew exactly what that meant."

Trump suggested that even a child could comprehend the threat behind such numbers and questioned how Comey, with his background, could claim ignorance.

Impact on the FBI's Operations

As the situation continues to unfold, the FBI remains focused on countering the resultant threats while balancing its myriad responsibilities. The agency is committed to using its resources effectively, in line with its core mandate of safeguarding American lives and institutions.

Director Patel has reiterated the importance of refocusing on real threats that endanger public safety, as opposed to being drawn into politically charged distractions.

Ultimately, the FBI’s goal is to redirect attention to its primary duty: addressing crimes and dangers that pose genuine threats to society.
