Dems get egg on their face over support for Colbert
A big story in the entertainment world last week was the upcoming cancellation of Colbert’s late-night TV show.
Trump took a victory lap over the cancellation, while Democrats said they will investigate the true nature of the cancellation of the show.
It turns out, the numbers behind the decision have already been released, once again showing the Democrats jumped the gun before knowing all the facts.
Canceled
On Wednesday night, Colbert broke the news to his audience.
He stated, “Next year will be our last season. ... It’s the end of ‘The Late Show’ on CBS. I’m not being replaced. This is all just going away.”
Earlier in the week, Colbert had ripped the company for its massive settlement with Trump, stating, “I don’t know if anything — anything — will repair my trust in this company. But, just taking a stab at it, I’d say $16 million would help.”
That, of course, led to Democrats starting to push the narrative that the show was canceled to pacify Trump, but that was not the case.
Democrats Come Out in Force
Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) was among those who pushed that Colbert was going off the air to pacify Trump.
He stated, “Stephen Colbert, an extraordinary talent and the most popular late night host, slams the deal. Days later, he’s fired. Do I think this is a coincidence? NO.”
Senator Adam Schiff (D-CA) then suggested a congressional investigation, adding, “If Paramount and CBS ended the Late Show for political reasons, the public deserves to know.”
They had no real idea why the show was being canceled, just that one of their talking heads was losing his job. This is what Democrats do… facts matter little if they can score some political points.
Facts Actually Do Matter
Reports broke toward the end of the week that the real reason the show was being canceled was that it was no longer profitable.
With a budget of about $100 million, the show was reportedly losing upwards of $40 million per year, and had been doing so for some time. See, this happens when you turn what is supposed to be entertainment into a political hit job.
Trump, of course, took a victory lap over the cancellation, stating, "I absolutely love that Colbert got fired. His talent was even less than his ratings. I hear Jimmy Kimmel is next. Has even less talent than Colbert! Greg Gutfeld is better than all of them combined, including the Moron on NBC who ruined the once great Tonight Show."
When Johnny Carson was dominating late-night, he cracked wise on politicians, but you never knew where he stood, and he never offered up lectures like today’s late-night TV hosts do. Not to mention, these types of shows are dying, and with there being so many of them, it was only a matter of time before they started getting cut from programming. With any luck, Jimmy Kimmel will be next.
