Did FBI Failures Allow New Orleans Terror Attack?

With the terror attack in New Orleans now several days behind us, it is time to start to look at the blatant failure of local and federal law enforcement in this case.

It turns out, had the local police and FBI done their jobs, this attack may have been preventable.

Local Police Failures

If you saw the video of the attack, you saw how easily the terrorist drove around a police car, then accelerated down the street to run over pedestrians on the street.

This could have easily been prevented had the New Orleans Police Department used all the tools in its kit to keep these streets secure. In a rather baffling interview, Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick admitted that the city had Archer barriers in storage, yet she did not know the city had them, which is why they were not deployed.

She told reporters on Thursday, “I didn’t know about them, but we have them. And so we have been able now to put them out.”

How can a superintendent not even be aware of the equipment she has for her department? I have seen these Archer barricades in person, and there is simply no way that truck would have made it past them, or they would have at least delayed the truck long enough for the police, who were literally right there, to stop the truck before it made it to the crowd.

FBI Failed

The FBI has taken a lot of heat over the last decade, and I am probably one of the few conservative writers who has defended the agency, or at least the majority of its agents. I have the honor of knowing about a dozen past and present agents personally, and I can assure you, they are all very upset with how management is operating the agency.

To that point, retired Supervisory Special Agent James R. Fitzgerald (Fitz), who had a Discovery Channel feature on his role in the capture of the Unabomber, recently appeared on Fox News to discuss, in part, the agency's failures.

The terrorist had social media activity and computer activity prior to the attack that should have raised alarms and warranted, if not a visit, monitoring of his activities by the FBI. Fitz discussed all this during his interview, and you can hear both the outrage and utter dismay over the agency’s failings here. Fitz is one of the agents I personally know, and I can tell you flat out his anger and dismay are genuine and not for the camera…

With Speaker Johnson (R-LA) winning the gavel on Friday, rest assured, those changes that Fitz referenced in his interview are going to take place very soon.

Lives Depend on It

Democrats are expected to play games once the nominee vetting starts, but the new Majority Leader in the Senate, Senator John Thune (R-S.D.), is telling the caucus to stiffen up and get the job done because lives literally depend on it.

Thune stated, "Our hearts go out to everyone affected by the senseless terror attack in New Orleans.

"With reports of ISIS inspiration, the American people expect clear answers from the administration. The threat posed by ISIS will outlast this administration, and this is a clear example of why the Senate must get President Trump’s national security team in place as quickly as possible."

Thune is absolutely correct, and while I could care less about Democrats dragging their feet on Trump’s buddies getting confirmed for ambassador positions, the Senate must quickly confirm law enforcement, homeland security, and intelligence posts to ensure something like this never happens again on American soil. And rest assured, with Joe Biden's immigration failings over the last four years, if we don’t root them out, there is far worse in our future, just as I have been warning over the last two years.
