Federal judge blocks transfer of 3 illegal aliens to Guantanamo Bay prison
President Donald Trump is on a mission as far as mitigating the ongoing illegal immigration crisis, but not surprisingly, the establishment forces are fighting back.
According to Fox News, a federal court this week blocked the Trump administration from "sending three Venezuelan immigrants held in New Mexico to the Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, detention camp."
The federal court issued a temporary restraining order blocking the transfer.
Lawyers for three men who were set to be flown to Gitmo for detention wrote in a filing that "the mere uncertainty the government has created surrounding the availability of legal process and counsel access is sufficient to authorize the modest injunction."
What's going on?
Lawyers for the three men said they "fit the profile of those the administration has prioritized for detention in Guantánamo, i.e. Venezuelan men detained in the El Paso area with (false) charges of connections with the Tren de Aragua gang."
A U.S. District Court in New Mexico was convinced that a TRO should be issued while the issue continues to be litigated.
Fox News noted:
Judge Kenneth J. Gonzales granted the temporary restraining order, according to attorney Jessica Vosburgh, who represents the three men.
The filing came as part of a lawsuit on behalf of the three men filed by the Center for Constitutional Rights, the American Civil Liberties Union of New Mexico and Las Americas Immigrant Advisory Center.
"It's short term. This will get revisited and further fleshed out in the weeks to come," Jessica Vosburgh, an attorney for the three men, said.
The TRO comes in the wake of several flights full of illegals that have already landed at Gitmo for processing.
The situation regarding illegals being held at Gitmo has already sparked a growing number of calls from immigrants rights groups who don't believe Gitmo is the appropriate place to have illegals detained.
Gitmo expansion
Not only does Trump not lose sleep at night over what immigrant rights groups demand, he has already doubled down and said he plans to expand how many illegals can be held at the military prison.
Fox News noted:
The immigrants are being held in the Guantánamo detention camp that was set up for detainees in the aftermath of 9/11. The immigrants are separated from the 15 detainees who were already there, including planners in the 2001 terrorist attack.
The military detention camp will eventually hold some 30,000 criminal illegal aliens.
So far, since taking office in January, over 8,000 illegal immigrants have been arrested by the Trump administration, with many more to come.
