Florida city council member breaks down in tears during immigration vote
You just have to love the theatrics of Democrats these days, not to mention the outright deception regarding illegal immigration.
Ladies and gentlemen, I bring you to Fort Meyers, FL, where a city council member broke down in tears over a vote on allowing ICE to be helped by local police.
Trump Wants Cooperation
Donald Trump has been trying to work with local police departments and sheriff’s offices to work with ICE to help deport more illegal immigrants.
To that point, Trump is trying to revive an old program that deputizes local police to help enforce immigration laws.
The Hamilton County Sheriff's Office has been supportive of this initiative even before Trump was in office, but says that when it reached out to the Biden administration, its calls went unanswered.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is also on board, and that has liberals in Florida just about losing their minds.
DeSantis Immigration Reform
It is not exactly a secret that DeSantis and Trump are no longer all that friendly, but DeSantis has not let that get in the way of helping Trump, especially when it comes to immigration.
In February, DeSantis signed sweeping immigration reform into effect. Part of that was to allow local law enforcement agencies to work with ICE.
DeSantis stated, “Today, the Florida Legislature has passed the strongest legislation to combat illegal immigration of any state in the entire country. We are ahead of the curve on ending the illegal immigration crisis.”
This was a big win for Trump as well as the state of Florida, with DeSantis dedicating nearly $300 million to hire more law enforcement throughout the state and pay bonuses for officers who assist in federal operations.
Rejected
Fort Meyers, FL, recently voted for what amounted to be sanctuary city status. The city council held a vote to accept or reject Governor DeSantis’ new policies in regard to empowering local law enforcement to help ICE.
Two members of the city council broke down in tears over the vote, leading Fort Meyers Mayor Kevin Anderson to state, "It was a little bit embarrassing. I think when we’re sitting on the dais, there really shouldn’t be room for emotions, because when we get emotional over things, we don’t always make the best decisions. We need to be strong, and we need to use facts and truth and information to make our decisions and not feelings of emotion."
The vote failed to pass, deadlocked at 3-3, with Council members Darla Bonk and Diana Giraldo breaking out in tears during the session. Bonk stated, "It is a tumultuous day and age. And this is a day I hate to be in this seat. But my city is not for sale." Giraldo added, "I can't stand behind this as an immigrant, the only immigrant sitting in this council.”
Nobody is against legal immigration here; this is about illegal immigration, yet Democrats continue to act like crossing our border illegally is not a real crime. DeSantis and his new Attorney General, James Uthmeier, made it quite clear that sanctuary cities in Florida will not be tolerated, so I hope the conservatives hold their city council members accountable when the hammer falls.
