GOP Senate resistance taking its toll against Trump
If Donald Trump is going to have a successful term, he needs everyone in the party to be on the same page as Trump to get this agenda passed.
I have always stated that I have no issue with a Senator or Congressman whose constituents want them to oppose Trump or any other Republican, but this election was pretty clear, and we are seeing a bit of an uprising among moderates to fight Trump.
Murkowski
Senator Lisa Murkowski is a problem for Trump, and always has been.
The Alaska Senator has fought Trump tooth-and-nail on many of his objectives, and she continues to go after Trump today.
For instance, about two weeks ago, Murkowski stated, "You've got everyone zip-lipped. Not saying a word, because they're afraid they're going to be taken down, they're going to be primaried, they're going to be given names in the media.”
To her point, Musk has been very open that he plans on backing a primary opponent against Murkowski to finally remove her from office.
Collins
Senator Susan Collins (R-ME), who is the chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, is now fighting Trump regarding emergency spending that he does not want to write a check for, saying it is excessive and not needed.
Collins joined Democrats on the committee to demand Trump spend the money, saying he does not have the right to omit line items.
The letter, in part, stated, “Just as the President does not have a line-item veto, he does not have the ability to pick and choose which emergency spending to designate. This interpretation is consistent with congressional intent and is the most logical and consistent reading of the law.”
Trump is trying to hold back roughly $3 billion in spending.
McConnell
Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY) is another member of the Trump resistance, and he is now blasting Trump on this peace negotiation with Russia and Ukraine.
McConnell stated, “Peace is a noble goal. And few deserve it more than the people of Ukraine, who feel the absence of peace most viscerally … When they stand in the rubble of their homes, their schools, and their churches. And when they say goodbye to children or parents bound for the front, some never to return.
“If there’s anyone who I’ll take at their word when they say they want peace, it’s the people who had peace stolen from them. The nation whose unique identity has led Kremlin totalitarians — time and time again — to starve, subjugate, and try to destroy it.”
McConnell is a war monger, so his resistance to Trump is not surprising, to say the least. While McConnell and Trump got along well for most of the first term, McConnell bucked Trump after January 6 and Trump’s claims the election was stolen from him. Since then, McConnell has been against Trump every step of the way in a state where Trump dominated the election. The solace for all of this is that McConnell is no longer in leadership, so we only have to tolerate him until the end of his current term, at which point he will likely retire.
