Harris campaign distancing from Biden in final weeks of election
Early on in the Harris campaign, reports surfaced that Kamala Harris was advised to distance herself from Biden if she wanted to win.
Harris briefly made up with Biden, but her current event schedule does not show any events where they will campaign together.
Get Away from Joe
Harris has only been in this race for about three months, but it has been a fairly adventurous three months in terms of the friction between her campaign and the Biden administration.
In October, a bombshell report surfaced on Axios regarding tensions between the Harris campaign and Biden’s team. The campaign did not believe that Biden was taking her campaign into account in decisions.
One person inside Harris’ campaign stated, "The White House is lacking someone in the room thinking first and foremost about how things would affect the campaign."
Let’s Play Nice
From that point forward, it seemed like Joe was purposely undermining Harris but doing it subtly so as not to be called out for hurting the Harris campaign.
For instance, when Harris criticized DeSantis for his handling of the hurricane recovery efforts, Biden backed DeSantis. When Harris held a rally in Michigan, Biden, for the first time in his presidency, showed up in the briefing room to take a few questions.
Then the sides appeared to make nice, as Harris apparently asked for Biden’s help. Even Jill Biden, who reportedly had a big issue with Harris, said they had “bonded.” During a campaign event, Jill stated, “As Kamala and I have gotten to know each other these past four years, you know, we bonded over many things, but one of the things that we talked about is how we lost our mothers, both to cancer, both long before we were done needing them.”
Stay Away
Harris has failed to establish that her administration would be any different from Joe’s, so it now appears that she is trying to distance herself from Biden again.
To that point, the current schedule of events does not show Harris and Biden campaigning together at any point during this final two-week stretch into the election. Harris is also making it a point again that she is not Joe Biden in the media, recently stating, "My presidency will not be a continuation of Joe Biden’s presidency, and, like every new president that comes in to office, I will bring my life experiences, my professional experiences, and fresh and new ideas. I represent a new generation of leadership.”
Biden will, however, reportedly campaign on his own for Harris. He will focus on getting his longtime supporters to back her rather than hitting the trail and doing rallies with Harris. I can guarantee you this is not sitting well with Jill or Joe Biden. So, don’t be surprised to see Biden take a few more subtle digs at Harris before everyone votes.
