High-profile Democrat Pundits Leaving X After Trump Wins Presidency

Democrats love to be overly dramatic when it comes to Donald Trump, with many threatening to leave the country if Trump won the election.

Now that Musk is involved, they are threatening to leave X, with several high-profile pundits having already deleted their accounts.

The Bad Orange Man

This opposition to Donald Trump goes back to the 2016 election when the popular thing to do was threaten to leave the country if Trump won the election.

Whoopi Goldberg led the large, telling her audience on “The View,” “Maybe it's time for me to move, you know. I can afford to go.”

Cher had also threatened to leave, but, of course, she stayed. This time around, she stated, “I almost got an ulcer the last time. If he gets in, who knows? This time I will leave.”

Lena Dunham was another one who threatened to leave but never did. At the time, she stated, “I  know a lot of people have been threatening to do this, but I really will ... I know a lovely place in Vancouver and I can get my work done from there.”

Leaving X

This time, while there were still threats to leave the country, the more popular move seems to be to boycott X, especially since Trump has vowed to appoint Elon Musk as the head of a new government efficiency office.

MSNBC’s Joy Reid led the charge, telling her supporters on Instagram that she had shut down her X account. She stated, “Hey, guys. So, today I finally did something I’ve been meaning to do for a while.

“And, um, the reason for doing it and kissing goodbye my 1.9 million followers over there is because I hadn’t been posting for a long time, I just didn’t want to contribute content once it was purchased by its present owner.”

Former CNN host Don Lemon also said he was shutting down his X account, stating, “I once believed it was a place for honest discussion and debate, transparency and free speech, but I now feel it does not serve that purpose.”

Will It Impact X?

The election of Donald Trump clearly impacted users on X, as the platform reportedly had 115,000 deactivated accounts after Trump was announced as the winner.

However, this may have less to do with Trump than with the new terms and conditions posted by X.

The direct beneficiary of this has been Bluesky, which gained about 2.5 million users while X accounts were being deactivated. That said, Bluesky is still way behind X in terms of users.

My guess is that everything will calm down after this initial hissy fit because far too many people are invested in X in terms of their influencer campaigns. While the far left may leave, overall, it will not hurt X to the point that Musk would have to consider shutting the platform down.
