House and Senate batting over Trump’s ‘big, beautiful bill’

Time is running out for Congress to get a budget bill in front of Donald Trump.

According to reports, it is not just a problem with Democrats, either, as the House and Senate appear to be at odds over the legislation.

Big, beautiful bill

Republicans were supposed to put an end to omnibus legislation, but that all changed when Trump was elected president.

Trump told House Speaker Johnson (R-LA) that he wanted one “big, beautiful bill” that would be able to include his entire agenda, which would enable the GOP to use reconciliation to ram it through Congress.

Regarding the new spending bill, Trump stated, “We have the big, beautiful bill. We gotta get that done, and that will put our country in a position like it’s never been in. It’s a reduction of taxes. It’s tremendous incentives for companies to come from all over the world to come into our country.

“It’s great environmentally, but it’s not this environmental scam that we went through, we all went through. It provides for everything. It’s a big, beautiful bill, and I hope we can get it approved.”

Not Gonna Fly

When the House passed its budget resolution framework, it did not sit well with Senate Republicans, who rejected the notion of an all-encompassing bill.

For instance, Senator Mike Rounds (R-SD) stated, “It doesn’t fit the president’s plan in its current form, so we would have to make some changes.”

Senator John Barrasso (R-WY) added, “I know my Senate colleagues are committed to, as is the president, permanence in the tax situation. And we don’t have yet in the House bill so we’re going to work together in a cooperative way.”

This bill will get zero Democrat support, so the GOP has to have its ducks lined up, and that is clearly not the case.

Let’s see some action

So far, House Republicans are not impressed with how the legislation is moving along in the Senate. On Monday, Johnson made a statement to put some pressure on the Senate to move forward with the House bill, stating, "We took the first step to accomplish that by passing a budget resolution weeks ago, and we look forward to the Senate joining us in this commitment to ensure we enact President Trump’s full agenda as quickly as possible.

“The American people gave us a mandate, and we must act on it. We encourage our Senate colleagues to take up the House budget resolution when they return to Washington."

Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) has already pushed back, stating, "Until we seriously address out-of-control spending and create an effective process to return to a reasonable pre-pandemic level, I will not support another budget resolution. Unfortunately, the House Budget Resolution does not do that."

You guys know I am not exactly a fan of Johnson, and one of the reasons why is that he seems to be shooting from the hip rather than being organized and working with his fellow Republicans. The clock is ticking here, and Congress is playing games when we simply do not have the time. Johnson should have a small committee working with a committee from the Senate to hammer this out and get a framework presented for approval. But yet again, he is fighting his battle in the media, which is just absurd.
