Islamic Scholar Convicted of Rape and Sexual Coercion

Islamic scholar Tariq Ramadan was rocked after a guilty verdict came down from a Swiss appeals court this week.

On Tuesday, the court stated that it “annuls the judgment of 24 May 2023” and ordered him to jail for three years.

Ramadan, a Swiss native, is the grandson of the founder of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt.

Going to Jail

In 2004, Time Magazine tagged Ramadan as one of the 100 most influential people in the world.

Ramadan is also facing charges in Paris for allegedly raping three women between 2009 and 2016.

According to Ramadan, everything he did was “discussed” beforehand with the women, and he did nothing wrong.

Among the allegations, he has been accused of physically abusing women with slapping and choking, as well as non-consensual penetration by numerous women.

The Bush administration banned Ramadan from entering the United States in 2004 when it was reported that Ramadan had donated to the Association de Secours Palestinian (ASP/ Palestinian Relief Organization) from 1998 to 2002.

This group allegedly funneled money to terrorist groups, such as Hamas.

Ramadan also taught at Oxford University as a professor of contemporary Islamic Studies.

Satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo has highlighted the case against Ramadan with some rather interesting cartoon work.

According to recent reports, death threats were made against the magazine after the cartoon was published.

Laurent ‘Riss’ Sourisseau, Charlie Hebdo‘s editor, stated, “Sometimes there are peaks when we receive explicit death threats on social media – this has been the case once again.

“Calls to murder have become commonplace.

“It’s always difficult to know if these are serious threats or not, but as a principle, we take them seriously and press charges.”
