Joe Biden Awards Co-Chairs of J6 Committee Highest Civilian Honor
This week, conservatives were stunned when Joe Biden awarded the Presidential Citizens Medal to Liz Cheney and Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS).
Republicans went ballistic, calling out Cheney for her behavior during the J6 Select Committee hearings.
Biden Honors Cheney
I think most of us would agree that had the J6 hearings been in a courtroom, a judge would have tossed the case, or at least most of the evidence. Instead, Cheney was made out to be a hero for siding with Democrats.
In giving the award to Cheney, the White House stated, "The Presidential Citizens Medal is awarded to citizens of the United States of America who have performed exemplary deeds of service for their country or their fellow citizens.
“President Biden believes these Americans are bonded by their common decency and commitment to serving others. The country is better because of their dedication and sacrifice.
"Throughout two decades in public service, including as a congresswoman for Wyoming and vice chair of the Committee on the January 6 attack, Liz Cheney has raised her voice—and reached across the aisle—to defend our Nation and the ideals we stand for: Freedom. Dignity. And decency. Her integrity and intrepidness remind us all what is possible if we work together.”
Did Cheney Break the Law
You are going to see a lot of dust kicked up over Cheney in the near future, so I want to make sure you have all the facts on this front.
Cheney was clearly communicating with Cassidy Hutchinson, who wound up being the star witness for Democrats. She recommended that Hutchinson change attorneys as well as allegedly coaching up Hutchinson’s testimony.
The problem from a conservative point of view is that Hutchinson’s testimony flipped, and it was all hearsay, which would not have been allowed in a court of law. Some of it was even third-person hearsay, which a judge would have tossed in a second.
Now, technically, Cheney did not violate House rules because she was not acting as an attorney and she had no client, as the House rule on this states, “This rule also does not preclude communication with a represented person who is seeking advice from a lawyer who is not otherwise representing a client in the matter.” Cheney had no client, so while we can complain about it, and while the optics on this are horrible, she did not violate any ethics rules with her conduct, and as noted, this was not a court of law, so witness tampering is also out.
Investigation Looming
America First Legal had previously filed an ethics complaint over Cheney’s actions, but the filing was nothing more than a headline grab because, as I stated, Cheney was not an attorney and the House rule ONLY applies to attorneys representing a client.
Even so, Speaker Johnson stated that the House would investigate the J6 Committee, which I actually support. I believe there were other actions taken by the committee, such as reportedly destroying evidence, where they need to be held accountable. At the very least, the American people need to understand how nefarious their actions were.
To that point, Speaker Johnson (R-KY) stated, “The Jan 6 Select Committee manipulated AND destroyed evidence – created a fake, phony narrative all to try and hurt Trump. They even hired a TV producer from the legacy media in a desperate attempt to legitimize what Americans knew was a total hoax and complete waste of time.”
I have never made excuses for what happened on January 6, as I think it was an outrage, but at the same time, I believe Democrats made it out to be more than it was, and I firmly believe this committee was run to be a one-sided form of entertainment to end Trump’s political career. They selectively edited the video and testimony that was presented, giving the American people only one side of the picture. If you ask me, rules for hearings need to be changed to emulate a courtroom because if that does not happen, regardless of who is in charge, these hearings are shams and one-sided to the majority.
