Justice Roberts unloads over rhetoric aimed at the court
Over the last few years, the rhetoric from both sides against the judiciary has become enflamed.
When either side does not get its way, they erupt, and Chief Justice Roberts has heard just about enough.
The left
With the Supreme Court now having six conservative justices, Democrats have been leading an all-out assault against it.
Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA) noted that one member of the Senate Judiciary Committee had stated, “The idea that you can trust a Supreme Court… has been blown to smithereens.”
Remember Senator Schumer (D-NY) outright threatening the conservative justices after Roe v. Wade was overturned?
He stated, “I want to tell you, Gorsuch. I want to tell you, Kavanaugh. You have released the whirlwind, and you will pay the price. You won’t know what hit you if you go forward with these awful decisions.”
Donald Trump
I will not deny that Trump has had some activist judges block him, but you need to allow the process to play out, and in most cases, the right ruling is made.
Trump always goes for the throat, however, as does his entire team, when they lose a ruling.
For instance, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that there is "a troubling and dangerous trend of unelected judges inserting themselves into the presidential decision-making process," adding that presidents can't have "their sensitive diplomatic or trade negotiations railroaded by activist judges."
And we all saw the comments by Trump during his criminal cases. Again, I get why Trump is frustrated, but this opens the door for both sides to attack, giving him no retort when the left goes unhinged.
Roberts says enough
Roberts does not speak publicly on many subjects, but this has been a particular sour issue for him, as I have heard him come out on this subject more than anything else.
He again addressed it this weekend, stating, “I’ve been compelled over the past few years to make statements about people on one side of the aisle – their views on judges – and on the other side.
“It becomes wrapped up in the political dispute that a judge who’s doing his or her job is part of the problem.”
My advice to everyone is to take a breath. If you don’t like the lower court decision, appeal. If you lose the appeal, take it to the state or federal Supreme Court. If the ruling gets overturned, file a complaint to get it on the record, and maybe you can get the robe of the judge if we see a pattern. You cannot criticize someone else for what you are doing, and I would rather see conservatives as the voice of reason when the left becomes unhinged, as they always do.
