Liberal host has meltdown over latest Trump cuts
Charlamagne Tha God, a very popular media personality on the left, just about had a fit over the cancellation of Colbert’s late-night show as the public broadcasting cuts.
Trump announced that he would be cutting the budgets of public broadcasting because the outlets were nothing more than Democrat talking heads.
While that Charlamagne peeved, it was the cancellation of Colbert’s show that sent him over the edge.
The Cuts
Trump was going after public broadcasting since the campaign, and once he got in office, he made it a top priority for trimming down the government budget.
In March, Trump made this top of mind, stating, “NPR and PBS, two horrible and completely biased platforms (Networks!), should be DEFUNDED by Congress, IMMEDIATELY.
“Republicans, don’t miss this opportunity to rid our Country of this giant SCAM, both being arms of the Radical Left Democrat Party. JUST SAY NO AND, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!!!”
There were, however, mixed feelings by Republicans over this, as some were wary of the cuts and how they would be perceived.
Cut It
It was a tough fight, but Trump finally got enough Republicans on the team who were willing to sign off on a rescissions package to cut public broadcasting funding.
The legislation passed last week, offering up $9 billion in cuts, which also included cuts to foreign aid.
Rep. Rosa Delauro (D-CT) stated, “It is a cliff. They’re already speaking about it, frightened to death, particularly in rural communities that they’re not going to have access to important information or alerts about weather situations, information that they need to know, education for their kids, because they’re not in communities where there are multiple sources of information.”
Rep. Mark Alford (R-MO) responded, “There’s so many means for communications now that we didn’t have in the 1960s. Everyone has it on their phone. Everyone, pretty much, has a smartphone, even in rural districts that that I represent, there’s all types of access for information that we didn’t have in the 1960s”
Charlamagne Meltdown
Relatively speaking, Charlamagne has been a bit refreshing for a liberal media personality, as he has been willing to call out Democrats on a lot of their foolishness during this run.
This time, however, he went after Trump, stating, "It's so obvious that Paramount is doing this to appease Donald Trump. Paramount cut a $16 million check to Donald Trump so they can get their merger approved and keep the FCC off their backs. That's not business. That's extortion dressed up in a suit and tie. That's hush money for the truth. Steven Colbert gets his show canceled after calling out the deal. That's not coincidence. That's consequence. That's what happens when you speak truth to power in a country where the power don't want to hear the truth."
He then stated, "This is textbook authoritarian rule. ‘Target your critics,’ ‘centralize power in a few hands,’ ‘intimidate through punishment or removal.’ And you know what that usually does? Shuts people the F up. Okay? Tightens control over public discourse. Sends a message to all media outlets that criticism of Trump could cost you access, approval, editorial control, or your job. This is what authoritarian regimes do. They weaponize legal systems to punish dissent and control messaging."
With so many ways to get information to the people, canceling public broadcasting can hardly be considered authoritarian rule. If anything, it will only make the cries against Trump in the media louder, so I disagree with his assessment. And we have already proven the Colbert cut had nothing to do with politics and everything to do with the fact that Colbert’s political rants had resulted in the show losing a reported $40 million. Believe it or not, not everything is a plot, scandal, or conspiracy. Sometimes, people lose their jobs simply because they are not doing a good job.
