Maine residents agree with Trump on controversial sports issue

After taking office, Donald Trump and Maine Governor Janet Mills got into a spat on camera over allowing transgenders to compete in women’s sports.

It turns out, the Democrat governor was fighting a losing battle, as Maine residents now support Trump's side of this fight.

See you in court

One of the first orders signed by Trump was to remove transgenders from women’s sports, holding back federal funding for those who did not comply.

Trump and Governor Mills got into a tense exchange at the White House over the order, with Trump telling Mills, “You better do it because you’re not going to get federal funding.”

Mills then responded, “We’re going to follow the law sir. We’ll see you in court.”

Trump shot right back, “Enjoy your life after governor, because I don’t think you’ll be an elected official afterwards.”

Maine caves

Democrats love to portray this as an attack against transgender athletes, but that is not what this is about; it’s about protecting the safety of female athletes and the integrity of their respective sports.

With the Trump administration putting on the pressure, the UMS, a network of eight public universities in Maine, wanted the administration to know it was playing by the rules. It stated it was in full compliance, and the USDA agreed.

The USDA then announced, "After the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) initiated a Title IX compliance review regarding federal funding, the University of Maine System (UMaine) has clearly communicated its compliance with Title IX’s requirement to protect equal opportunities for women and girls to compete in safe and fair sports, as articulated in President Donald J. Trump’s Executive Order.”

UMS Chancellor Dannel Malloy responded, "We are relieved to put the Department’s Title IX compliance review behind us so the land-grant University of Maine and our statewide partners can continue to leverage USDA and other essential federal funds to strengthen and grow our natural resource economy and dependent rural communities through world-class education, research and extension."

Got this one wrong

I have always stated that I would never fault a politician for putting the wishes of their constituents over party, but Mills was doing the complete opposite, and a recent poll proves it.

This was her personal stance, not the stance of her constituents, with the recent University of New Hampshire poll showing that 64% of Mainer residents are behind Trump on this one.

Only 29% of those surveyed said they would support transgenders in women’s sports.

The people have spoken, and it seems pretty clear what they want. It just baffles me that Democrats continue to want to die on this hill, when survey after survey shows the overwhelming majority of Americans want to protect women’s sports from biological men.
