Maine reverses course on athletics policy
When Donald Trump issued his executive order to stop biological males from competing in women’s sports, it sent the Democrats into a tizzy.
The irony in this is that Americans have made clear their position on this subject, and one of the states that led the resistance has finally buckled.
In Violation
Trump has called out Maine’s governor publicly, and there is clearly bad blood between these two, so it was no surprise to see Maine exposed as having violated Trump’s order, thereby putting its government funding at risk.
Maine was found to have violated Trump’s Title IX rules, giving the state 10 days to comply or risk losing its funding.
Acting Assistant Secretary for the Civil Rights Division of the Education Department stated, “If Maine does not swiftly and completely come into compliance with Title IX, we will initiate the process to limit MDOE’s access to federal funding.”
To that point, Maine was adamant it would not cave, but that stance did not last very long.
USDA Suspends Maine Funding
During fiscal year 2024, Maine received about $30 million in funding from the USDA, aid which was suspended after Maine refused to fall in line with Trump’s transgender order for women’s sports.
Governor Janet Mills, a Democrat, has been jousting with Trump on this front, likely believing there is no way her funding would be revoked. She was wrong.
On Tuesday, the USDA pulled the funding, with its chief financial officer stating that all payments to the school would be paused while it “evaluates if it should take any follow-on actions.”
This was Trump pushing his cards into the middle of the table and daring Mills to challenge him. Mills blinked first.
Falling in Line
On Wednesday, the United States Department of Agriculture announced that a group of Maine universities have agreed to comply with Trump’s order.
The USDA then announced, "After the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) initiated a Title IX compliance review regarding federal funding, the University of Maine System (UMaine) has clearly communicated its compliance with Title IX’s requirement to protect equal opportunities for women and girls to compete in safe and fair sports, as articulated in President Donald J. Trump’s Executive Order.
"Any false claim by the UMaine can, and will, result in onerous and even potentially criminal financial liability."
This a big win for Trump and conservatives, but it is a monumental win for women. I will never understand why so many liberal women are in favor of biological men taking over their athletics. It is not only unfair, but also dangerous, and would eventually lead to serious injury or death of a female athlete. This order is just common sense, and women should be ecstatic that Trump is finally getting these schools to cave.
