Maine sports system refuses to follow Trump's ban on trans athletes playing in women's sports

President Donald Trump’s new Title IX rules, which bans biological males from competing in women's sports, apparently doesn't apply to some areas of the country.

According to Breitbart, the governing body for school sports in Maine has completely rejected Trump's rules and will still allow transgenders to compete in women's sports, which a majority of the country believes to be an unfair practice.

Mike Burnham, executive director of the Maine Principals Association (MPA), made the announcement official on Wednesday, standing defiant in the face of Trump's rules.

Trump's executive order on the subject, so far, has not met much in the way of resistance at the state level until now.

What's going on?

Not following Trump's executive order on the issue could place schools at risk of not receiving any more federal funding.

Breitbart noted:

The president signed an executive order banning transgender athletes from playing in women’s and girl’s sports on February 5. Consequently, federal Title IX rules were altered to that effect, and schools that refuse to obey the order risk having their federal funding withdrawn.

Burnham released a statement on the state's stance on the issue, citing a "conflict" with the state's Human Rights Act.

"The executive order and our Maine state Human Rights Act are in conflict, and the Maine Principal’s Association (MPA) will continue to follow state law regarding gender identity," Burnham said.

He also confirmed that he's “instructing all schools in Maine to follow the Maine Human Rights Act" and will not follow any of Trump's rules as outlined in the executive order he signed on the issue.

"The staff at the MPA will closely monitor any updates from federal and state authorities regarding the potential impact of the president’s executive order on high school sports participation and adjust its policy accordingly," Burnham added.

Social media reacts

Many social media users were furious over Maine's resistance to Trump's EO, with some calling for parents of children in Maine schools to file suit as a result.

"Every parent in Maine needs to submit a Lawsuit against the Maine Sports Authority, they're 100% breaking the law," one X user wrote.

Another X user wrote, "I know states have certain Rights, but Democrats think they are all powerful whoever is in charge."

Undoubtedly, the issue will end up in the court system sooner than later.
