Mayor Adams Says He Will Not Be Able to Help ICE
Since Mayor Adams found out he was being targeted in an investigation by the DOJ, he has been playing Trump for a possible pardon.
Now, after meeting with Trump, and having made it sound like he was on board with Trump’s deportation plan, Adams is reversing, saying he cannot help because of “the law.”
Adams Gets Indicted
We all knew the trail would eventually lead back to NYC Mayor Eric Adams when numerous officials in his administration were indicted. While Adams tried to play cool, there were signs that he was also a target.
Then, in September 2024, it was announced that the DOJ had indicted Adams on, among other charges, bribery.
U.S. Attorney Damian Williams, in part, stated, “As alleged, Mayor Adams abused his position as this City’s highest elected official, and before that as Brooklyn Borough President, to take bribes and solicit illegal campaign contributions. By allegedly taking improper and illegal benefits from foreign nationals—including to allow a Manhattan skyscraper to open without a fire inspection—Adams put the interests of his benefactors, including a foreign official, above those of his constituents.
“This Office and our partners at the FBI and DOI will continue to pursue corruption anywhere in this City, especially when that corruption takes the form of illegal foreign influence on our democratic system.”
Trump Will Look at Pardon for Adams
After the indictment, Adams started to really apply pressure to the Biden administration on the immigration front, clearly trying to work Trump to gain some favor just in case Trump won the election.
Once Trump got elected, Adams really started to pour it on, stressing how much he wanted to work with the new administration.
This led to Trump sticking up for Adams, claiming that Adams was being targeted by Biden for pushing back against the immigration policies of the administration.
So, when Trump was asked about a possible pardon for Adams, Trump responded, “I said it not as a prediction, a little bit lightheartedly, but I said it. I said he’s going to be indicted, and a few months later he got indicted. So, I would certainly look at [pardoning Adams].”
Adams Backs Out
Adams recently stated that he will not be able to help Donald Trump and his massive deportation plan because “The law is the law.”
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch backed Adams on this, stating, “We will obviously continue to work with our federal partners on criminal matters, but a person’s immigration status is not something that we track, and we cannot and will not, by law, participate in civil immigration.”
So, this goes back to a question that I had asked last week. The Supreme Court has, time and again, found that immigration is a federal issue. So, how can a city claim it is a sanctuary city and brush aside federal immigration laws to not cooperate with ICE and like agencies?
Something is truly broken here, and while sanctuary cities have been tested before the court in other cases, I think Trump really needs to take this to the wall to see if sanctuary laws are truly valid under the Constitution.
