Mexico agrees to extradite cartel members to United States
Donald Trump just secured yet another big win for the administration, more specifically, a big win on the crime front.
Last week, it was reported that Trump had approved military action against cartels to stop the flow of drugs into the country, among other crimes.
Mexico pushed back, however, on Tuesday, reports broke that Mexico had agreed to hand over more than two dozen cartel members to the United States.
Operation approved
Reports leaked last week that Trump had secretly signed an order that would have permitted the use of our military to go after cartels.
This was a bold move by Trump, as this order would not only approve the use of military at sea, but also on foreign soil.
When asked about the reported order, Anna Kelly, a White House spokeswoman, stated, “President Trump’s top priority is protecting the homeland, which is why he took the bold step to designate several cartels and gangs as foreign terrorist organizations.”
The move is not unprecedented, but it surely would garner significant scrutiny for the boldness of it.
Mexico pushes back
When the report about Trump’s order started to circulate, Mexico pushed back immediately.
President Claudia Sheinbaum stated, "The United States is not going to come to Mexico with the military.
“We co-operate, we collaborate, but there is not going to be an invasion. That is ruled out, absolutely ruled out."
Secretary of State Marco Rubio had a little something to say about that as well, stating, "We have to start treating [cartels] as armed terrorist organizations, not simply drug-dealing organizations.”
Send them our way
It would appear that Mexico is now doing everything it can to not only get on Trump’s good side for trade deals, but it is also looking to pacify Trump’s desire to enter Mexico and eradicate the cartels.
On Tuesday, it was announced that 26 cartel figures were being extradited, with White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stating, "Today is the latest example of the Trump administration's historic efforts to dismantle cartels and foreign terrorist organizations.
"These 26 men have all played a role in bringing violence and drugs to American shores -- under this Department of Justice, they will face severe consequences for their crimes against this country. We are grateful to President Sheinbaum and the Mexican government for their collaboration in this matter."
I cannot state enough of big of a win this is for Trump to be able to bring these individuals to justice, not to mention the strongarming of Mexico to get them to agree to extradite them. Trump is doing a masterful job of dominating the news cycle with stories regarding promises made, promises delivered. I know what history says will happen in 2026 in the House, but Trump is doing everything in his power right now to defy it.
