Mexico agrees to send 10,000 troops to border
Donald Trump’s threats against Mexico and Canada worked.
After warning both countries he would hit them with 25% tariffs, they both blinked, with Mexico even offering to send 10,000 troops to the border to help lock it down.
The Threat
We all know that Donald Trump loves his tariffs, and he used them again to try to get Canada and Mexico to fall in line on border control.
Trump told both countries that if they did not do their part to help lock down the border, he would hit them both with a 25% tariff on all goods coming into the country.
Initially, both countries defied Trump, but as the deadline approached and the tariffs were getting ready to be put in place, they both blinked.
Not only that, but there were also reports that China reached out to Trump regarding tariffs he was putting in place.
Mexico Caves
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum had initially mocked Trump, even threatening tariffs against US goods heading over the border.
She quickly learned that Trump does not blink in situations such as this and realized that if she did not help, her economy would be crushed.
So, she agreed to send 10,000 National Guard troops to the border to help lock it down. The primary concentration for Mexico will be to stop the flow of drugs over the border, while Trump agreed to step up our efforts to block guns from coming over the border.
Trump celebrated the deal on Truth Social, posting, "I just spoke with President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico. It was a very friendly conversation wherein she agreed to immediately supply 10,000 Mexican Soldiers on the Border separating Mexico and the United States. These soldiers will be specifically designated to stop the flow of fentanyl, and illegal migrants into our Country.”
Canada Falls
Canada was also talking tough, with one of its premieres having canceled a Starlink contract with Musk as well as talking smack about Trump.
But again, that posture ended rather quickly when Canadian PM Justin Trudeau made arrangements with Trump to lock down the border in exchange for having the tariffs put on hold.
Again, Trump announced the deal on Truth Social, posting, “Canada has agreed to ensure we have a secure Northern Border, and to finally end the deadly scourge of drugs like Fentanyl that have been pouring into our Country. Canada will implement their $1.3 Billion Border plan.”
So, for all the whining about Trump’s tariffs, they worked, at least in this case. And as I noted, China has also reportedly reached out to discuss the tariff’s Trump placed against them, so right now, I would say that Trump is swinging the big stick and it is working.
