New York Times Writer Calls Constitution ‘Dangerous’

You just have to love it when people from other countries decide to dump all over our Constitution.

Such is the case of Canadian-born writer Jennifer Szalai, who just penned a piece for the New York Times doing just that.

Her piece, “The Constitution Is Sacred. Is It Also Dangerous,” was published over the weekend and it is already getting shredded.

Leave Our Constitution Alone

In her piece, she wrote:

“Americans have long assumed that the Constitution could save us; a growing chorus now wonders whether we need to be saved from it. The document that’s supposed to be a bulwark against authoritarianism can end up fostering the widespread cynicism that helps authoritarianism grow.

“Trump owes his political ascent to the Constitution, making him a beneficiary of a document that is essentially antidemocratic and, in this day and age, increasingly dysfunctional.

“After all, Trump became president in 2016 after losing the popular vote but winning the Electoral College (Article II). He appointed three justices to the Supreme Court (Article III), two of whom were confirmed by senators representing just 44 percent of the population (Article I). Those three justices helped overturn Roe v. Wade, a reversal with which most Americans disagreed.”

Her point is moot because every president (and every member of Congress, for that matter) benefits from the Constitution.

Furthermore, if she really knew the Constitution, she would understand that the Electoral College is very much at the heart of protecting our presidential elections, ensuring that one or two states do not dominate the outcome.

Additionally, Trump is far from the only candidate who has benefited from the electoral college, as we have had five presidents lose the popular vote but win the election.

John Quincy Adams (Whig Party), Rutherford B. Hayes (Republican), Benjamin Harrison (Republican), George W. Bush (Republican), and Donald Trump (Republican) all won their respective races while losing the popular vote. And that is exactly why Democrats want the Electoral College abolished.

Szalai concluded her article, "One of the biggest threats to America’s politics might be the country’s founding document.”

Uhm, no… and Elon Musk agreed, reposting the article on X with the caption, “They want to overthrow the Constitution.”

Fox News Laura Ingrahm asked, "Does the NYT hate the Constitution? Of course it does.”

Here is the thing… you don’t get to pick and choose what you like and hate about the Constitution in terms of keeping it in play, something the Democrats regularly do (see the Second Amendment).

When you consider the document was written about 250 years ago, it is actually quite amazing that our Founding Fathers had such foresight into how history would play out the protections that would be needed.

The good news for Szalai is that if she does not like our Constitution, she can go back to Canada.

I am just wondering if she realizes that in some countries, she would be locked up for what she wrote. But she just trashed the very document that protects her right to publish her sickening opinion.
