Prosecutors say migrant was set up with Trump assassination letter

Last week, reports broke that 54-year-old Ramon Morales-Reyes had been arrested for threats against Donald Trump.

The narrative quickly flipped, however, after an inmate confessed to having set the man up.

Threatening Trump

Morales-Reyes was picked up after authorities received a letter with his return address that was threatening the life of President Trump.

The letter stated, "We are tired of this president messing with us Mexicans." It continued, "You have been deporting my family and I think it is time Donald J. Trump gets what he has coming to him."

The letter concluded by hinting that Trump would be taken out at one of his rallies. With all the recent threats against Trump, authorities had to take this seriously.

The following day, he was picked up by authorities over the threat. It had also been reported that letters had also been sent out to several other officials, which is when people’s ears went up that someone was playing games and setting up Morales-Reyes to take the fall.

I Did It

This week, everything changed when Demetric Deshawn Scott, 52, confessed that he had set Morales-Reyes up to prevent him from testifying against Scott.

Scott allegedly robbed Morales-Reyes' bike and physically assaulted him during the robbery. Morales-Reyes was due to appear in court to testify against him, so Scott wrote the letter hoping he would be arrested and deported so he could not testify against him in the case.

Morales-Reyes, however, is no saint, with a long record.

After the confession, DHS announced, "The investigation into the threat is ongoing. Over the course of the investigation, this individual was determined to be in the country illegally and that he had a criminal record. He will remain in custody."

He Was Framed

Prosecutors now seem to be willing to move any charges that had been filed against Morales-Reyes.

The most recent filing stated, “The letters were all handwritten and, although not exactly the same, all wrote about immigration policy and threatening to kill ICE agents or President Donald Trump. Those letters also appeared to be written by the same person.”

Prosecutors also stated that once they brought Morales-Reyes in, it became clear that they had the wrong guy, as he needed a translator just to talk to agents.

While that will get him out of trouble for this particular crime, he is in the country illegally, and he does have a rather significant record, so we are still expecting him to be deported.
