Rep. Green announces resignation of seat

Not long after the BBB passed through the House, Rep. Mark Green (R-TN) announced that he was going to resign his seat.

He warned everyone that this would happen, saying he only ran to ensure that the BBB would pass.

I have not taken kindly to this, as I believe he is leaving the GOP in a bad spot.

Time to Go

Last month, Green posted a note that after the BBB was passed, he was calling it quits to chase down a private sector opportunity.

He stated, “It is with a heavy heart that I announce my retirement from Congress. Recently, I was offered an opportunity in the private sector that was too exciting to pass up.”

He had previously stated that he wanted to retire at the end of last term, but he came back to help pass the BBB for Donald Trump, as if he were the only one who could do that.

I think it was so he could put a feather in his cap, and now the GOP loses a seat, while there is still plenty of work to be done.

Tennessee Special Elections

Had Green retired, we would have an incumbent in that seat who could run on the strength of the BBB, but now the state has to have a special election, with the GOP spending money it should not have to spend.

So, since there are more than 12 months left in the term, the primary election must be held within 55-60 days of the writs.

The general election must be held between 100 and 107 days after the writs.

Point being, that seat may not be filled until the end of the year, and we only have three votes to spare as it is. This was selfish, in my opinion.

He’s Gone

Now that the bill has officially passed, Green took no time to turn in his resignation.

He wrote, in part, "Today was my last vote in Congress.

“My time here started with a fire to serve veterans, it continued with leading the historic impeachment of a cabinet secretary, and now it ends with achieving real border security. I am grateful my last vote was for the one Big Beautiful Bill."

Every seat counts right now, and it is especially important for the 2026 mid-term elections, which history says will go to the Dems. Now the state GOP has to spend money in an off-season election, then figure out how to defend that person heading into the mid-terms, with no voting record to stand on. Nice job, Mr. Green. Enjoy your retirement, raking in the big bucks in the private sector.
