REPORT: McCabe Used Steele Dossier to Target Trump
When Donald Trump took office, he went after then-FBI Director James Comey, eventually firing Comey from his position in May 2017.
Andrew McCabe then took over as acting director, and a new report is claiming that it was McCabe who used the Steele dossier to go after Trump.
The Firing of James Comey
Comey was a disaster as FBI Director once it became clear that Donald Trump was running for election. The odd thing is that prior to that, he was very well-liked among agents, as I know about a dozen people who initially stuck up for him.
Comey was being pressured by Trump from the outset, eventually leading to Trump firing Comey in early May 2017.
Trump clearly held Comey accountable for the Russian collusion investigation, sending Comey a letter, stating, “While I greatly appreciate you informing me, on three separate occasions, that I am not under investigation, I nevertheless concur with the judgment of the Department of Justice that you are not able to effectively lead the bureau.”
Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein backed the firing, writing, “I cannot defend the director’s handling of the conclusion of the investigation of Secretary Clinton’s emails, and I do not understand his refusal to accept the nearly universal judgment that he was mistaken.”
Push Back
Because of Comey’s standing at the time, the firing did not go over well with the agency. Many agents were outraged over the firing, believing that Trump would appoint a loyal operative to take over the agency instead of an “FBI guy.”
Trump poured fuel on the fire with his comments on this, stating at the time, “It is essential that we find new leadership for the F.B.I. that restores public trust and confidence in its vital law enforcement mission.”
As we all know, Trump eventually decided on Christopher Wray as the director, a decision that was widely applauded at the time.
The Senate Judiciary Committee approved Wray 20-0, and his nomination sailed through the Senate 92-5. Wray has already announced that he will resign before Trump takes office, with Kash Patel having already been nominated.
Weaponizing the DOJ
As part of agents being upset over the firing of Comey, it is now being reported that McCabe knowingly used a report, the Steele Dossier, that had been described as “salacious and unverified” by Comey himself to take down Trump.
RealClearInvestigations reporter Paul Sperry dropped a bombshell report this week claiming it was McCabe who was behind the revitalization of the Steele dossier.
His report found, “Text messages and congressional testimony transcripts reveal that McCabe’s “Russia team” re-established direct contact with ex-British spy Christopher Steele to build a case against the president for espionage and obstruction of justice after Trump had fired FBI Director James Comey on May 9, 2017.”
I fully expect this all to be investigated once Patel takes over, but I also expect the media and Democrats to claim that Trump is weaponizing the DOJ against his enemies. That is not what this is, however. It is people like McCabe who abused their power, and they must be held accountable.
