REPORT: More than 50% of ignored ICE detainers in California
California has money problems again now that all that COVID money has been spent.
A recent report showed that the state spent billions in healthcare for illegals, but now another report has surfaced that is even more damning for Governor Newsom.
We Need $3.4 Billion
Last month, a report exploded online about a $3.4 billion shortfall for California due to excess spending in the Medi-Cal Medicaid program.
The state needed a loan to cover the shortfall in benefits, but guess who was also receiving benefits in the state?
If you guessed illegal immigrants, you guessed correctly.
Paul Winfree, who is the president and CEO of the Economic Policy Innovation Center, explained what the problem was, stating, “States can do these provider taxes to funnel money back to the state, that they are then using to pay for, to put illegal immigrants on Medicaid. That’s quite literally what’s going on."
Newsom Admits Illegals Contributed to High Costs of Healthcare
Newsom has always considered California a sanctuary state for illegals, literally welcoming them with open arms, taxpayers be damned.
When all was said and done, Newsom requested $6.2 billion in loans to cover the healthcare shortfall, but he also admitted that providing healthcare on the cuff for illegals was partially to blame for the problem.
California Senate Republican Minority Leader Brian Jones blasted Newsom, stating, "Even Jerry Brown refused to expand Medi-Cal to all illegal immigrants because he knew it was fiscally irresponsible and unsustainable.
"Now under Newsom, legal residents are paying the price both financially and in reduced access to healthcare. The public deserves answers: Why are the costs so much higher than what Newsom promised? What is Newsom’s plan to fix the financial disaster he created?"
It Gets Worse
As if that was not bad enough, it now appears that some of those migrants likely had criminal detainers on them from ICE that were ignored due to sanctuary laws in the cities and state of California. A new report surfaced that week that found more than half of all ignored detainers for ICE for FY2023 were in California.
Former California Governor Jerry Brown, who started the sanctuary push in the state, explained, “The bill that I signed had a number of exceptions. There were people who were convicted of violent crimes, or even serious crimes who were not getting any benefit of any so-called sanctuary.
“Subsequent legislation has taken it broader, and some of the cities, like San Francisco, have gone way, way beyond in their effort to create a wall, almost a separation of state and federal government. I think that is going to prove difficult.”
I cannot wait for the Supreme Court to take on this issue, as I firmly believe sanctuary status is completely illegal and unconstitutional. The Supreme Court has clearly set the precedent that save minor exceptions, immigration falls under federal purview, and if that is the case, that would mean any local laws giving sanctuary to illegals would be unconstitutional. I just don’t see any other conclusion that is possible based on previous Court rulings.
