REPORT: Trump fears Iran could be his Libya

Donald Trump is really stuck between a rock and a hard place in regard to striking Iran.

He is now facing several challenges on this front, ranging from pushback from his supporters to worries about this becoming the Libya of his administration.

Polling

First and foremost, Trump does not want to upset GOP voters on this issue, and right now, the numbers are not in his favor.

A new poll by YouGov showed that a mere 23 percent of GOP voters believe the United States should have direct involvement, with a whopping 51% completely against any involvement in the war.

We are also seeing this in Congress, with some of Trump’s biggest supporters, such as Rep. Greene (R-GA), openly coming out against any involvement.

Trump cannot afford to lose support, and he cannot afford to get us into a prolonged conflict.

Plan Approved

According to a BBC report, the attack plan against Iran has already been approved by Trump, but he has yet to give the thumbs up.

Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel's prime minister, continues to apply pressure, stating, "We control the skies over Tehran.

“We are striking with tremendous force at the regime of the ayatollahs. We are hitting the nuclear sites, the missiles, the headquarters, the symbols of the regime.”

Again, though, Israel does not have a weapon capable of knocking out the underground bunker, nor does it have a plane to carry the payload.

Trump’s Libya

There is another reason that Trump is apprehensive about a regime change in Iran if the US gets involved, and that is because Trump does not want to see Iran become his Libya.

This is in reference to the campaign in 2011 to take out dictator Muammar Gaddafi, which led to a decade of anarchy in the country.

One source, however, stated that this is apples and oranges, explaining, “Libya was a much more extended kind of bombing commitment, and it ended up being regime change. If the regime falls [in Iran], then it’s not on Trump, because that’s not the goal of his very limited strike.”

As I have stated before, I would back the United States making this strike, but I have also stated it should be the absolute last resort. Let Israel do all the dirty work, and if it believes it can kill that bunker, let them have their shot. This is truly a rock and a hard place for Trump.
