RI prosecutor who berated police suspended
Last week, a video of a Rhode Island prosecutor went viral. The woman appeared to be intoxicated and was apparently asked to leave an establishment, at which point local police were called.
She refused to leave, berated the officers, and resisted arrest, and after using the old “do you know who I am line,” she has now reportedly been suspended.
Do you know who I am?
You just have to love it when public officials get intoxicated and think that throwing around their title gets them a free pass.
Such was the case of Special Assistant Attorney General Devon Flanagan, who appeared to be intoxicated outside of a restaurant and was asked to leave.
When police showed up, the restaurant manager clearly just wanted her gone, but instead of leaving, Flanagan decided to tell the officer, in a slurred voice, how to do his job.
The officers were more than patient, but that eventually ran out, and after telling them she was an AG more than a dozen times, she wound up in cuffs, with an embarrassing video going viral.
Not the first time
Before we get to what has happened to Flanagan, this is far from an isolated incident.
Earlier this year, Democratic Paulsboro, New Jersey Councilman Theodore D. Holloway II was pulled over when he went off on police officers.
At one point, he told the officers, "Don’t think I ain’t going to talk to Gary about this. I’m the one that hired you!" Gary is the first name of the local police chief.
While Holloway then proceeded to call the police chief, he continued to rant, stating, "You actually pulled over an elected official. You’re not pulling over a random. You’re pulling over your boss. I am literally your boss!" Rules for thee, not for me!
Suspended
While Flanagan told the arresting officers they would regret taking her into custody, it is Flanagan who has been placed on unpaid leave.
Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha was clearly upset with her behavior, stating, “I’ve got 110 lawyers. She embarrassed all of them,” adding that this was “inexcusable.”
Neronha later added, “It’s just really hard to find and keep capable lawyers, and so I just have to think really carefully about this one. But no question there will be a strong, strong sanction here.”
He concluded, “She’s humiliated herself. Regardless of what happens vis-à-vis her employment with us, she’s going to have a long time coming back from this. It’s just really unfortunate.” That, my friends, is Karma.
