Sanctuary cities face tough decisions in wake of Bondi freezing funding

This week, after being confirmed, Attorney General Pam Bondi announced that she was going to freeze all funds dispersed by the Department of Justice to sanctuary cities and states.

This has created panic in blue cities around the country, but there is a lot to unpack here, so I really wanted to take a deep dive look at this.

Bondi Freezes Funding

Bondi wasted no time in announcing that she would be dropping the hammer on sanctuary cities, and I have been waiting for this shoe to drop for some time.

As I have previously reported, the Supreme Court has been quite clear that immigration is a federal issue, so the idea that cities and states can pass laws to circumvent federal immigration law needs to be settled.

Now, as I predicted, this is already being challenged in court, but that is a good thing.

We need this issue to go before the Supreme Court to have it settled once and for all. This is not going to be a war that is won or lost quickly. In fact, it may take most of the Trump administration to get it settled.

Tough Decisions

Right now, sanctuary cities have to make a decision if they want to play ball of if they want to continue to harbor criminals.

Dems will lean on the idea that federal judges have backed sanctuary city laws, but the judges making these decisions, for the most part, have been liberal judges who are more like activists.

Democrat mayors continue to say they will not cooperate with ICE, but as PA House Minority Leader Jess Topper stated, there are likely to be consequences for those actions, stating, "If these municipalities are not upholding the law, then I would expect there to be consequences, and I support that.”

The problem for these cities is that if Bondi’s freeze holds, we are likely talking about money for local law enforcement that is badly needed, so crime rates will soar, all due to the fact these cities are harboring criminals. And just how to do think that will play with residents?

Bring Them In

As part of this big push to hold sanctuary cities accountable, Congress is holding hearings later this month, calling in mayors to explain their positions.

House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) stated, "Sanctuary mayors owe the American people an explanation for city policies that jeopardize public safety and violate federal immigration law by releasing dangerous criminal illegal aliens back onto the streets. These reckless policies in Democrat-run cities and states across our nation have led to too many preventable tragedies."

He added, "The policies in Boston, Chicago, Denver and New York City prioritize criminal illegal aliens over the American people. This is unacceptable, and their leaders must be held accountable."

I think the American people were pretty clear about where they stand on this issue by electing Donald Trump as president in 2024. If they choose this as the line in the sand, they are going to regret it.
