Sanders’ effort to halt Israel aid blocked
Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) is fairly typical of the Democrat approach to Israel.
To that point, Sanders tried to have the military aid to Israel cut, but his efforts went down in flames in the Senate.
Trump Approves $3 Billion Arms Deal with Israel
Last month, Donald Trump went around the usual congressional review for military aid by approving a massive arms deal with Israel.
The State Department notified Congress it has approved the sale of 35,500 MK 84 and BLU-117 bombs and 4,000 Predator warheads worth $2.04 billion.
There was also a munitions sale and heavy equipment sale, bringing the total to more than $3 billion, with another $4 billion apparently in the works, per an announcement by Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
The deal came as Israel and Hamas have been trying to work toward a peace deal, with Hamas reportedly making the latest concession to free all of the hostages.
Israel Vows to Seize Large Areas of Gaza
With the added supplies, Israel is now more determined than ever to rid Gaza of Hamas, recently stating that its offensive in Gaza is "expanding to crush and clean the area" of militants and to seize "large areas that will be added to the security zones of the State of Israel.”
Defense Minister Israel Katz has held the line that there is “only one way” this war ends, and that is for Hamas to be expelled from Gaza and all remaining hostages to be freed.
The Hostage Families Forum, which represents the families of those still in captivity, is pushing Israel hard to come to a peace deal.
The group recently stated, "Our highest priority must be an immediate deal to bring ALL hostages back home — the living for rehabilitation and those killed for proper burial — and end this war.”
Senator Rejects Bernie Sanders
Sanders has been trying to handcuff Israel from the outset, siding with the far-left progressives of his party as pro-Palestine.
On Thursday, Sanders proposed blocking the deal in aid and sales, which would come close to $9 billion all told, but he failed miserably. The first vote landed at 82-15 and the second vote came in at 83-15, both against Sanders’ proposals.
Sanders released a video to support his legislation, stating, “This is barbaric. So let us be clear. The United States must end our complicity in these atrocities. We cannot be part of this any longer. As many of you know, I strongly opposed President Biden’s blank check military aid to Israel and I am equally opposed to what President Trump is doing.”
Sorry, Bernie… try again. While there is clearly support for Palestine and Hamas on the left, even in Congress, there is at least still some common sense remaining that Israel is not the bad guy in this war.
